THOMAS, GARNET- of Burton, age 86, passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at his residence. A service will be held on Monday, September 21st, 2026, at Great Lakes National Cemetery at 1:30 PM, with military honors. The cemetery is located at 4200 Belford Rd, Holly, MI 48442.
Garnet leaves behind a rich legacy rooted in hard work, dedication, and a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors. Born to the late Arthur and Lylan Thomas, Garnet grew up on a farm, where he developed a strong work ethic early in life. He started driving tractors at the remarkable age of four years old.
After attending Croswell-Lexington High School, Garnet went on to serve in the Marines. Following his military service, he became an auxiliary police officer in Pontiac, Michigan, before pursuing a career as a diesel mechanic for Central Transport. On July 17th, 1965, he married the love of his life, Linda Montney. Together, they built a wonderful life and raised their family.
Garnet was actively involved in his community, serving as a 4-H leader where he mentored young people and taught the sport of shooting. Outside of his work, Garnet found peace and purpose on the water fishing or simply playing a round of golf. He truly enjoyed traveling and the simple pleasures of the outdoors.
Garnet is survived by his wife Linda Thomas. Children: Christina & Scott Cain, and Jennifer & Jim Reid; Grandchildren: Michelle (Brendan) Haigis, Thomas (Morgan Rose) Hatton, Matthew (Morgan) Hatton, Rocky (Cayla) Hatton, Lyzz (Ian) Morrow, James Reid, Peter Reid, and Taylor (Travis) Cain; Great-Grandchildren: Twelve great-grandchildren; Sister: Janice Woodbury; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. Garnet was preceded in death by his siblings Chuck McNew, Jack McNew, and Linda Kelly. |
