Melissa May Spitler, of Brant
passed away tragically on May 10, 2025, at the age of 52.
Melissa May Spitler was born on August 13, 1972 in Owosso, Michigan to Freda and James Spitler. She was the mother to three beloved children, Justin Spitler-Johnson (31) of Colorado, Miranda Spitler (25) of Owosso, Mi, and Jackson Spitler-Ward (12) of Brant, Mi.
Life was not always an easy path for Melissa but she always did her best to live it to the fullest, within her means. She was fiercely loyal to those she loved and even when she had her own struggles she was known for helping others in any way she could. From picking up a broom or hopping on a mower when visiting family, always planning food to bring or cook for family gatherings, and especially for trying to offer her younger family, or friends of her children a refuge to have some love and laughter in their lives. She knew personally that life could be tough and her spark in life was finding a way to make someone crack up at a joke or silly antics, especially when they needed it most. Everyone that knew her knew how much she loved to laugh herself. Melissa loved to tell the story of her teacher at Chesaning Middle School pulling her out of class for laughing and saying, “Melissa, you laugh about everything, you would even laugh at the color of the walls!” To which she hilariously pointed out that of course she would because they were orange and pink!
She was not a large person and at least twice in life she found herself exhausted and using her knowledge of cpr. One of those times even saved the life of one of her dear friends. She would’ve done the same for a stranger. Melissa loved summers being spent with family at the beach in Arcadia, camping or just sitting around a fire, floating down a river with friends, and riding her motorcycle. Giving her kids good memories was one of her top priorities in life and she always wished she could give and do more for all those she loved. It was not uncommon for her to have a houseful, or car load, of kids getting up to something and that was when she was truly the happiest. Many nieces and nephews have stories of epic sleepovers and dance parties. Everyone that knew her will miss the life of any party, her colorful language and humor, and uproarious laughter.
Melissa was preceded in death by her mother, Freda Lois Spitler, all maternal and paternal grandparents, and a baby brother, Jesse Edward Young. She is survived by her children, Justin Spitler, Miranda Spitler, and Jackson Spitler-Ward, Father James Spitler, siblings; Teresa Pierce, Coriena Richmond, Jim Spitler, Jeff Spitler, Lorna Spitler, step siblings; Josh Tedrow, Heather Patterson, Ashley Hahle, and many nieces and nephews. Service will be held at …. With a visiting time of… Any monetary donations will be deposited into a trust fund set up for her youngest child Jackson Spitler-Ward.
