George Serban

Born: 11/13/1933
Died: 3/7/2022
Age: 88
Community: Flushing, MI

Serban, George F, 88, of Flushing, our beloved hero and family patriarch rose to Heaven on eagles wings, Monday, March 7, 2022. He will be profoundly missed. Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and no funeral services will be held.
George was born in Turistvandi, Hungary, November 13, 1933, to Stefan and Vilma Serban, the youngest of three children. As a young boy in Hungary, George enjoyed his growing up years until the end of WWII, when the advancing Russian Army forced George and his family to leave Hungary and flee to Germany where American troops had established a refugee camp. In 1949, after having received sponsorship by the Zehnder family of Frankenmuth, George and his family eagerly stepped aboard a converted American troop carrier to begin their new life across the Atlantic. They eventually settled in Flint where George worked his way from bag boy to store manager at a local grocery store chain. One of his proudest moments occurred in 1965, when he became an American citizen.
In 1966, George joined the City of Flushing Police Department and attained the rank of Lieutenant before retiring in 1995. He proudly served the City of Flushing and its citizens with a strong sense of commitment to duty, honor, loyalty and integrity. He took pride in, and readily embraced his role as a mentor and leader to his fellow police officers. While serving the Flushing community, he attended numerous training classes and as well, received numerous awards and commendations and was chosen police officer of the year several times.
Though what truly brought him the most joy was his love for his family. On May 7, 1970, he married the love of his life, Deborah Lewis, whom he had met on a blind date. They were married in the Hungarian Reformed Church two years later and enjoyed almost 52 years together. They welcomed two wonderful children, Amy (James) Spencer of New Lothrop and Paul (Colleen) Serban of Flint. George most especially loved making memories with his two beloved grandchildren, whom he fondly nicknamed, Marrah “Goldie” (Xavier) Witt, of Owosso and Maxon “Rocky” Spencer, of New Lothrop. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Stephen. Along with his wife, children and grandchildren, he will be greatly missed by special sister-in-law, Martha Ducat, of Lambertville, Michigan; special niece and nephew-in-law, Ilona, Al and Hannah Crowder, of Clio; and many dear family members and friends.
Thank you to Compassus Hospice, especially Kristine and Christine, for their compassion and guidance during this difficult time. For those wishing to honor George, do so by simply being a good person, share a smile with a stranger, choose kindness at every opportunity and first and foremost, be a good human. To our beloved Georgie, well done darling, you’re leaving behind a legacy of humility, the value of hard work, a profound love of family and a deep love for your adopted country, America…. “life is good” was your favorite mantra and one you embraced and lived by. We will forever carry in our hearts cherished memories of you and the love you so unselfishly shared with us. Always and forever you will be the wind beneath my wings. Your loving wife and family. Life is good.
