Sarah Kathleen Foster (Kathy) was the middle child of five born to Mary (Lamb) and Roy Taylor on February 21, 1937 in Eupora, Mississippi. Because her mother died when Kathy was six, she and her siblings were raised by an extended family and the whole village. Her maiden aunts embedded the love of learning, imagination, gardening, and ultimately the sense of independence and adventure that would carry Kathy around the world.
President of the Class of 1954, Kathy was one of 54 graduates of Eupora High School. During her freshman year in college, she attended, as family tradition dictated, an all women college, but the following year she transferred to Mississippi College and graduated in 1957. Kathy also earned her Master in Education in Guidance and Counseling from Mississippi College in 1966.
From 1957 to 1960, Kathy taught elementary school in Pensacola, FL having the courage to cross two state lines and begin her career at age 20. Her desire to travel the world quickly ensued and she became an educator with the Department of Defense from 1960 to 1969. Her teaching assignments took her to Air Force bases in Turkey, Denmark, Germany and the Philippine Islands. What an adventure this was with many life-changing experiences. Kathy returned to the U.S.and was a teacher and school counselor for Lansing Schools. In 1974 she earned a specialist degree from MSU in School Psychology as well as earning a Doctor of Education degree in early and middle childhood from Nova University in 1991. Kathy worked as a school psychologist for the Shiawassee RESD until her retirement in 1997 and was highly respected in this role.
On Sweetest Day 1974, Kathy met Jack Foster on a blind date and soon after married and she and Lory moved to the farm on Lennon Rd. She called this chapter “The Foster Years” and she enjoyed being a farmer’s wife and traveling with Jack after his retirement. Jack predeceased Kathy in 1997. During her retirement years Kathy found such joy in being an active “Ama” with her three grandchildren that grew up living next door to her. She also enjoyed being a Master Gardener and many of the beautiful gardens in Shiawassee County are bound to have some of her plants that she shared with other gardeners! Kathy also served on several community boards, was active for many years with the Owosso Garden Club, First Presbyterian Church in Flint, P.E.O, and was a life-long learner.
Her life journey on earth is now complete and she is reunited with her family and lifelong friends that have gone before her. The memory of her love will be shared by her children Rob and Lory Thayer and her precious grandchildren Tyler (Caity) Thayer, Jack (Katelyn) Thayer, and Rylee Thayer (Ryan Doranski) along with special nieces Leigh Douglas and Charlotte McGarr.
A special thank you to the staff at The Meadows and PleasantView that supported both Kathy and her family during her journey with dementia. The family will be establishing a scholarship in her name to benefit a graduate of Eupora High School. Please, no flowers-she was happy with all the flowers she had in her home and garden during her lifetime. If you think of her, say a kind word to encourage someone or give flowers to an unsuspecting stranger.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm on Friday, November 10, 2023 at Nelson-House Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 11am until the time of service.
