Grace McAllister Meinecke
Saginaw, MI

Grace McAllister Meinecke, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 9 surrounded by family and in the comfort and care of staff at Meadow View Manor in Saginaw. She was 94 years old. Born in a log cabin in Gaylord, MI on May 9, 1920 to Daniel and Grace (Gemmill) McAllister, she grew up on the family farm homesteaded by her grandfather and surrounded by the lakes and woods of northern Michigan. After attending several one-room schools she left home at 15 to attend high school in the nearby town of Gaylord. Upon graduating near the top of her class in 1939, she was awarded a scholarship to Central Michigan Teacher’s College where she earned a two-year County Normal certificate allowing her to teach in one-room schools. Her first assignment was Leidlein School in Buena Vista Township where she would eventually meet Henry Meinecke. They married on July 11, 1942 and would raise their family on the Meinecke centennial farm where Henry engaged in farming. She left the classroom when she started her family but returned to teaching in 1953 at Bidwell School in Birch Run Township. When the school was consolidated she was assigned a first grade classroom in Birch Run. In 1956 she joined the staff at Ricker Elementary in Buena Vista as a first grade teacher. She returned to Central Michigan University during this time and eventually earned her bachelor’s degree with a focus on the teaching of reading. In 1961 she received her Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan. She was thrilled to be hired by Saginaw City Schools in 1959 where she taught first grade until her retirement in 1982. Retirement allowed Grace the time to develop her interest in gardening, golfing, bowling, traveling, reading, and writing. After the death of Henry in 1999, she began writing in earnest and self-published her memoirs, “The Lumberjack’s Daughter”, detailing the difficulties of growing up in northern Michigan during the Great Depression.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children and their spouses: Don and Barbara Meinecke of Saginaw, Jean and Elroy Schluckebier, of Frankenmuth, and Ken and Leigh Ann Meinecke of Maumee, Ohio. In addition she leaves nine grandchildren; Julie (John) Milewski, Brian (Amy) Meinecke, Carrie (Jim) Batista, Michelle (Martin) Wekerle, Sandra (Kyle) Bader, Michael Schluckebier, Sara, Peter, and Daniel Meinecke; five great grandchildren; John and James Milewski, Peyton Batista, Henry and Nikolas Wekerle; her sister, Clara Mason, East Jordan, sister-in-law, Lyla Meinecke, Frankenmuth, and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Grace was preceded in death by Henry, her husband of 58 years, her brother, Lloyd McAllister, sister, Lottie Mason, son-in-law, Jeff Snow.

Funeral services will take place Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Bridgeport, with burial in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. Family and friends my bid farewell to Grace at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. on Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
