Larry was born at home in Burton, Michigan on September 9, 1942, to the late Armour and Eolah (Avery) Coates. He attended Bentley Community Schools and then served in the United States Army. Upon returning from his service in Hawaii, he began working for General Motors. He retired in 1994 from Chevy in the Hole after earning 30 years of seniority. He was a proud member of UAW Local 659.

Larry was an avid card player and enjoyed trips to the casinos around Michigan. You didn’t have to look far from anywhere Larry was to find lottery tickets, and it was a favorite gift from family. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and they will fondly remember weekly trips to McDonalds for ice cream and the play place and that he attended every activity in which they were involved. He was a jokester who didn’t smile much for the camera, but his real smile was a warm blanket of love felt by all. He loved the water and had a boat at AuGres Yacht Club in Michigan and spent winters on Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota, Florida.

Surviving are daughters, Anne (Larry) Peters of Sarasota, Florida, and Diane (Jon) Woodruff of Genesee Twp, Michigan; grandchildren, Larry Peters III, Theresa (Alan) Mackie, Elizabeth Peters, and Charlotte Woodruff.

Larry is also survived by 4 sons, David (Laurel) Hawes, Dan (Vicki) Hawes, Doug (Claudia) Hawes, and Duane (Julie) Hawes; grandchildren, Doug Hawes Jr., Stephanie (Steve) Haller, Emily (Tony) Gjocaj, Jacob Hawes, Phillip Hawes, Nicole Hawes, and Barbara Hawes; great-grandchildren, Hayden Hawes and Arian Gjocaj, all who lived in his heart and stayed his even after the paper bond was broken. He also leaves many other loving family members and friends including lifelong friends Lloyd and Nancy Bach.

All 8 siblings preceded him in death: Betty Laureto, Maxine Donnelly, Alice Cooper, Helen Davis, Ruth Avery, Barbara Kraklau, Charles Coates, and Michael Coates.

Those desiring may make contributions to the United Way of Genesee County or Emmanuel Baptist Church Lake Ann Scholarship Fund.
