Genesee St., Davison, MI 48423, or any of the institutions of the Flint Cultural Center.

David Eugene Wood was born in Detroit, MI on February 18, 1943, to James S. and Orthabelle Detweiler Wood but they soon moved to Yale, Michigan. Yale became Dave’s hometown. Two brothers, James and William, joined the family. Growing up, events with the extended family clan were important and often involved the Missionary church and Brown City Missionary Campground. David enjoyed the special close bond of Yale’s Class of 1960. After college at Bethel and CMU, Dave returned to teach at Yale High School where he met and married a new teacher, Joanne Toebe. In 1968 David and Joanne moved to Davison to teach. Daughters, Lara and Heidi were born and the family put down roots in this community. In the growing school district, the other young teachers and neighbors became like family. Family activity revolved around the rhythm of the school year. Dave enjoyed the high school sports, often lending a hand with taking stats or joining the scouting team. Vacations were times to visit Munising grandparents, camp at Michiluca or Genesee County Parks, enjoy “mystery weekends”, or even farther trips to see friends or family or visit cities like Chicago and Toronto.

Teaching American Government and US History, Dave valued opportunities to be active in local government, serving on the city council, some of the city boards, and as a poll worker. With the Davison chapter of the Optimist Club, “Friends of Youth, “ he was able to give back to the community. Needless to say, the last four years of Dave’s life were stressful ones as he closely followed the political scene. The family joined Salem Lutheran Church of Flint, making lifelong friends. Over the years, Dave served on the church and the Michigan synod’s councils, various boards and committees, taught Bible studies, and sang in the choir. After an early school retirement in 1994, Dave greatly enjoyed two different retirement jobs, working for Rowe Engineering and for the Flint Youth Theatre. The Flint Cultural Center offered many other enjoyable opportunities for him as a patron and a volunteer. He particularly looked forward to Mott Community College basketball season, cheering on the Mott Bears. Always an admirer of beautiful car design, Dave indulged his love of cars with a Mazda Miata and joined four of the “Back to the Bricks” tours of the state. Retirement also was a time for Dave and Joanne to visit almost every state in the union, seeing places where history was made, being uplifted by the natural grandeur of the country, and visiting with dear friends and family scattered to the four corners of the USA. Times in Munising renewed bonds with family and friends.

Family grew as Heidi married Douglas Evans and Lara married Lee Patrick Orr. The new couples added new dimensions and interest to Dave’s life. Dave shared so many special times with grandchildren, Madison, Mariah, and Lucas Evans – camping and other trips, school programs, watching them try and master sports and hobbies, New Year’s in Munising, special milestones in life, Grandparents University and most of all he was proud to see them becoming compassionate, thoughtful young adults. After a month coping with a serious health crisis, David died on December 8, 2020 at Ascension Genesys Hospital at 77 years of age.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne; daughters and family, Lara and Pat Orr of Columbiaville, MI, Heidi and Douglas Evans of Ann Arbor, MI; grandchildren, Madison Evans of Traverse City, MI and Mariah and Lucas Evans of Ann Arbor, MI; brothers and their families, James S. and Barbara Wood of Clyde, MI and William J. and Sherry Wood of St. Clair, MI; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dianne Toebe of Anchorage, AK, Joshua and Carol Toebe Whiting of New York City, John and Judith Toebe of San Pedro, CA; nieces and nephews.
