Alton “Al” Hart, age 91, a lifetime Lapeer resident, died Monday, September 12, 2022.
Al was born January 27, 1931, in Lapeer to Lyle and Florence (Davis) Hart. He graduated from Otisville High School, class of 1949. Through the years Al attended several universities eventually earning his bachelor’s degree. He married Dorothy St. Amour on August 31, 1951. He served his country proudly in the Michigan National Guard. In his working days, Al was a metallurgist and later plant superintendent for Bostick Foundry in Lapeer. When the foundry closed in 1983, he went on to work for Albar Industries as a quality control engineer – eventually retiring in the year 2000.
In his spare time Al volunteered throughout Lapeer. He was an active member at the First Presbyterian Church in Lapeer, serving as elder, usher, and former long-time rose gardener. He was a reliable member of the First Presbyterian’s Men’s Brown Bagger Club. For years, he has served as chairman and steadfast volunteer for the Lapeer County Genealogical Society. He was instrumental in organizing a model research center at the Lapeer County Heritage Museum. He has worked closely with Lapeer County Historical Society on key projects, including Pages of History and the Civil War display. Most Friday mornings, you could find Al at the Lapeer County Clerk’s office helping people research old records.
Al is survived by his wife, Betty Gamblin; children: Lorraine Smith, Darrell (Karen) Hart, Rhonda Gill, Vianne Clementson, Richard (Debra) Beebe, Linda (Dan) Hudson and John (Rhonda) Beebe; step-daughter, Laurie (Jackie) Gamblin; five grandchildren: Scott (Lisa) Smith, Leah Hart, Christopher (Heather) King, Jeffrey Gill and Gary Gill; five great grandchildren: Steven, Brandon, Ashley, Emily and Alex. Al was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Hart; sons-in-law, Brion Smith and Gary Gill; great grandson, Nicholas; sisters: Zelma Daniels and Armeda Daniels as well as his aforementioned parents.
Visitation will be held from 4-8PM Friday, September 16, 2022, at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Al’s funeral service will be 11:00AM Saturday, September 17, 2022 at First Presbyterian Church in Lapeer. Rev. Hal Shafer will officiate. Burial will follow at Stiles Cemetery, Lapeer. Al’s family will receive friends from 10-11AM Saturday at church. Al will receive military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post #16.
