Herbert Gordon Bell, age 82, formerly of Bowling Green, Florida, Montrose and Kalkaska, MI, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at his home with his family by his side. He was born August 5, 1941, in Evart, Michigan, the son of Ray and Helen (Frederickson) Bell. He was a 1959 graduate of Evart High School where he met and married his high school sweetheart Edna Thompson on October 1, 1960. A blessed union of 63 years followed, creating amazing memories, weathering numerous difficult times, and leaving a loving family that will be their legacy.
Herb worked for General Motors in Flint for over 30 years retiring in 1996, moving from Montrose to Kalkaska where he would be closer to some of his brothers. He spent nearly 20 years coaching little league football in Montrose, a program he helped start, he also served as the president of the Athletic Boosters for a number of years. The epitome of a family man, he first coached, then supported his sons in any sport or activity they were involved in. Herbert always put his family first. He had very close relationships with his brothers and was an ever-devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He especially loved hunting and being with his family at their deer camp in Evart. His winter family at Pioneer Creek RV Resort in bowling Green was also very near to his heart. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and enjoyed golfing, playing cards and horseshoes.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Edna; two sons, Anthony (Roxanne) Bell, Brian (Angela) Bell; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; siblings Russell (Mimi) Bell, Robert (Sherry) Bell, Christie (Don) Dunlop, brother-in-law Lincoln Kinney, and two sisters-in-law Betty Bell, and Darla Bell.
He was preceded in death by his son, William Gordon Bell; his parents and siblings, Grace Kinney, Iris (Dave) Jenson, Hazel (William) Spence, Charlie (Joan) Bell, Clare Bell, Don Bell, and Carl Bell.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, January 19, 2024, at 4 pm at Lux and Whiting Funeral Chapel, Breckenridge. Visitation will be held from 2 pm until the time of services. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Montrose Little League Football or Montrose Athletic Boosters.
