Frank was born on November 22, 1923 to James Arthur Hamilton and Georgia Belle Dowell in Benton, Illinois. He attended a one-room schoolhouse in his youth and later graduated from McLeansboro High School. He earned a BA and MA in Creative Writing at Southern Illinois University, 1949, and a MA in Education from Kansas State Teachers College, 1955, and a PhD in English from the University of Kansas, 1961. Frank married Betty Jean Spellmeyer in 1956 and relocated to Flint to teach at Flint Community College (Mott Community College). He taught English, American Literature and Creative Writing, while always encouraging his students to be creative as advisor for the Huron Review, a student poetry publication, for many years.
Frank was a creative prolific wordsmith and reveled in vivid imagery. His publication included: Thoreau on the Art of Writing, Leaf Scar, Love Cry, Christmas Book of Poetry, and Nancy and her Angels. His books are in the Library of Congress.
Since retirement in 1986, Frank has kept busy with poetry publications, enjoying grandchildren, camping, “puttering” with his cars, and watching the backyard antics of birds, squirrels, and people. His kind, loving, and gentle soul will truly be missed.
Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Betty of 64 years, and Lucille Brodersen (m. 1952-1954, mother of Ann); sisters, Fern (Warren) Gibbs, Joyce (Howard) Whitfield, and MaeDell (Morton) Wasserman. Survived by his children, Doug (Diane) Hamilton of Flushing, Karen (Mark) DeGalan of Canton, Ohio, and Ann (James) Short of Suisun, California; grandchildren, Jason (Lyn) Short, Joel Short, Craig (Trisha) Hamilton, Neil Hamilton, Luke DeGalan, and Anna DeGalan; great-grandchildren, Natalie, Annalia, Stella, Andrew, and Morgan. |
