BURKLAND, Carol Ann (Derk) – of Millington, MI, age 76, an entrepreneur and genealogist, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at Brookdale Senior Living in Grand Blanc, MI. A Funeral Service will be held 11 AM Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Road, Davison, MI 48423; Pastor Sarah LaRose-Nettell officiating. Cremation will take place following the service. The family will receive visitors 4-7 PM Friday, April 22, 2022 and 10-11 AM Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Allen Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, in Carol’s memory.

Carol was born in Heath Town, Wolverhampton, England on October 9, 1945. She was the daughter of Constance Kirkbride Derk, originally of Wednesfield, England, and Benny R. Derk Sr. of Davison, MI. At 6 months old, Carol was brought to America on the S.S. Huddleston with her mother. They both became American citizens residing in Davison, MI. Carol was a graduate of Davison High School, she also attended both Mott Community College and the Sheffield School of Interior Design. She married Gerald Burkland on June 18, 1966, at St. John Catholic Church in Davison, MI. Carol was the co-founder of multiple building and remodeling companies with her husband, Gerald. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 2010, she received the Martha Washington Medal of Outstanding Service to the Sons of the American Revolution. She was an avid genealogist, taking many trips across the country to uncover information. Carol was a devoted cat rescuer and enjoyed many pets over the years.

Carol is survived by her husband, Gerald Burkland; 2 daughters, Wendy (Paul Borron) Burkland and Kim (Bryan Ward) Burkland-Ward; stepdaughter, Rebecca Burkland; 3 grandchildren, Brendan Lombard, Garrett Lombard and Natalie Ward; 3 step grandchildren, Jessica (Jeremy) Niles, Matt (Jenna) Cottrell and Trevor (Teija) Cottrell; 5 step great grandchildren; brother, David (Susan) Derk; and many other loving family members and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benny R. Sr. and Constance Derk; and her brother, Benny L. Derk Jr.
