Common, William Harry - Age 93, of Harrison, formerly of Flint, passed away Friday, March 6, 2026 at MediLodge of Clare, surrounded by family.
Devoted husband to Jan and loving father to Susie, he was a kind, patient and gentle man who deeply loved his family.
Bill lived during the glory years of the auto industry in Flint. He was born at Hurley Hospital on September 4, 1932. He graduated from the old Northern High School in 1951. Bill married his wife Janice Hawes on May 9, 1953 at Flint Episcopal Church. He served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 and was stationed in Queens, New York. Bill and Jan loved living in New York City.
After serving in the military, Bill delivered for a florist shop. He met Janice when delivering flowers to a hospital. Bill worked as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Flint for many years and adhered to the motto: “Neither rain nor snow nor heat nor gloom of night will stop the swift completion of their appointed rounds” (but, only when on a motor route).
Bill and his family were fanatical University of Michigan fans, and also enjoyed snowmobiling, the Flint Generals, Toronto Maple Leafs hockey and being a Ham radio operator. They loved going to Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
After retirement, his family relocated to Cadillac and then settled in Harrison, Michigan where they enjoyed everything Northern Michigan has to offer, including special day trips to the Mackinac Bridge.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jan, mom Albina, dad Christopher Cartwright Common, brothers Chris Allen Common and Richard Common, nephew Chris Lee Common and wife Cindy.
Bill is survived by his beloved daughter Susie, sister-in-law Joan Common; nephews Charles (Deborah), Cary (Celia), Eric (Dianne) and Kurt (Maila); nieces Karma, Valentina and Grace (Doug).
Special thanks to his great-nephew Chris Charles Common and wife Angie.
Bill will be missed by all who knew him and loved him. Some believe that God reserves a special place in Heaven for parents of disabled children.
Family wishes to thank neighbors David & Shelley, Rick & Luann, and the staff at MediLodge of Clare for their compassionate care.
Memorial services will be announced in the future. |
