BRANHAM, ALAN WILLIAM – Age 74, of Flint, Michigan, died peacefully on May 6, 2022 after a long illness.
Alan was born in Bluefield, West Virginia and spent his early childhood there. When he was seven his family moved to Flint, Michigan where he lived for most of his life. After his graduation from Southwestern High School he was employed by General Motors and served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. He continued his formal education while he worked, earning his Associate Degree from Mott Community College and two Bachelor of Arts Degrees and a Master’s Degree in Special Education from the University of Michigan - Flint. After he retired from General Motors he worked as a teacher. In addition to his formal education, Alan pursued knowledge independently for his entire adult life with special interests in science and history.
Alan was a logical and linear thinker and a man of strong opinions, but he readily changed his opinion when confronted with new facts. He was kind, humane and compassionate. He loved his family, all animals, and his community as a whole. He believed that it is a moral imperative to strive for improvement of society and was a proud supporter of the UAW and the labor movement. He enjoyed backgammon, chess, his front porch, and his many feline companions.
Alan is survived by his wife Linda Pohly, his son Steven (Kimberly) Branham, his sister Wanda Klink, and nieces and nephews Erin Franzen, Logan Franzen, Candice Kile, David Klink, Eric Klink, Rebecca McQueen, Victoria Pohly and Alyssa Warren. His family also included sisters and brother-in law-Susan Franzen, Thomas Klink and Sharon Pohly, parents-in- law Carl and Nancy Pohly, and special great nephews and great niece Christopher Merrell, Dylan Thompson, and Alexis Vadner. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Ronald Branham and Iva Branham, his brothers Randall Branham and Ronald ("Mitch") Branham, his sister-in-law Nancy Branham, and his niece Mei Margaret Pohly.
Alan supported the causes of social justice, civil rights and human rights for all people, and the humane treatment of animals.
