Nicholas X. Karay, Sr. of Petoskey, MI, and formerly of Temperance, MI and Farmington Hills, MI, passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2024
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 2245 East Baldwin Road, Grand Blanc, Father Peter Bistolarides officiating.
Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery.
Visitation 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service at the church.
He was born on November 13, 1923, in Detroit, Michigan to Xenophon and Artemis (Kariotoglou) Karayanides. He married his beloved and devoted wife of 65 years Mary (Pyrros) on June 22, 1947.
Nicholas proudly served in WWII and participated in the Normandy Landings. He was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church of Westland, MI where he served on the Board of Directors and the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Grand Blanc, Michigan. He was a member of the APHEA Chapter Ypsilanti/Toledo District 11, VFW Post #1146, St. Clair Shores, MI, and the Young at Heart. He attended Wayne State University and devoted many years to restaurant management.
He is survived by his son, Nicholas X. (Michaleen) Karay, Jr. of Petoskey, MI and Helen (Sam) Cracchiolo of Boca Raton, FL;
sister, Katie Chinonis of Grand Blanc, MI, brother Andrew (Anne) Karay of Trinity, FL; sister-in-laws, Betty Pyrros of Bloomfield Hills and Angeline (Keke) Pyrros of Redford, MI and brother-in-law, James Mouzakis of West Bloomfield.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his parents, siblings, Alexander Karay and Mary Mouzakis, sister in law Luella Karay and brother-in-laws, Elias Chinonis and James G. Pyrros.
He was the loving and proud Papou of Jennifer (Thomas) Margherita of Petoskey, MI, Allison (Matthew) Baron of Grand Rapids, MI, Christopher (Mary) Cracchiolo of Tampa, FL, and Maria (Dr. Stephen) Patten of Palm City, FL. He was the "great Papou" of Evan Margherita, Avery and Emily Baron, Natalie, Stephen Jr, John, and Valerie Patten and Nicholas and Isabella Cracchiolo.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Villa at the Bay for their compassionate care and kindness over the past 1 1/2 years. In addition we appreciate the support provided by McLaren Hospice and Independence Village prior to that.
