Shirley Annette Hockin, of Rapid City, age 85 died Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at Grayling Hospital.
Celebration of Life service is at 1:00 p.m. Saturday January 7, 2023, at Living Hope Church. Visitation will be held 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at Living Hope, 3050 W. South Airport Rd, Traverse City, MI 49684. Officiated by Pastor Carey Waldie.
She’ll be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery. Kalkaska, MI.

Shirley was born in Flint, Michigan on October 21, 1937, the daughter of Clarence and Verda (Gwaltney) Barnett.
Shirley grew up in Burton MI and graduated from Bentley High School in 1955. She played Field Hockey and was celebrated as Homecoming Queen. She fell in love with her High School Sweetheart Tom Hockin and they were married December 10, 1955. They were married 55 Wonderful Years.
Surviving Shirley are her children Michael (Karen) Hockin of Traverse City, Todd Hockin of South Boardman, Michelle (Don) Begley of Grand Blanc, and Anthony (Lisa) Hockin of Rapid City.
Her precious grandchildren Krystina (Caleb), Amanda (Chaz), Alex (Kathryn), Lizzie (David), Michael, Rachel, Abigail, Joshua, and Sophia (Joe). Sister Katheryn ”Joyce” Burt, Brother Douglas Barnett and many niece, nephews and cousins.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Thomas, parents, brother Jack, grandsons Joseph Begley and SPC. Maxwell Hockin.
Shirley was a member of Living Hope Church in Traverse City. She was a Homemaker, Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Grandmother, Great-grandmother, Aunt and Friend to many.
Shirley was active in many Church activities, Red Hats Society, Cracker Barrel Saints, and Kasky Line Dancing. She had a great love for Children, Faith, gardening, painting, music, singing, Lake Leelanau, playing Mahjong with dear friends and cheering on her sons in hockey (A Lifelong Love).
Shirley could light up a room with her smile and contagious laugh. She had a grace and compassion she shared with everyone; she was a Force in Everything she did. She taught her children what Honesty, Integrity, Love, Hard work, Family, Friends and Faith was all about. She was passionate and supportive with all her grandchildren. She made them all feel like they were #1 and special in her heart.
When you came to the Hockin Household you were welcomed, loved and fed. She enjoyed and made it her mission to take care of Everyone.
Her Kindness, Strength and Convictions will never be forgotten. It will be carried on for her through us all. We love you so much. May Your light shine brilliantly over us all.
