Head, Walter E. – of Montrose, age 76, died Wednesday, February 17, 2021, at Ascension Genesys in Grand Blanc. A private family funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, February 22, 2021, at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Montrose. Dr. Gordon MacKinnon officiating. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Saturday from 4-8 PM and Sunday from 1-8 PM. Due to Covid restrictions, we are limited to 25 people at a time for visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SVSU Foundation/Baseball Endowment fund in memory of Coach Walt Head.

Walt was born May 4, 1944, in Flint, Michigan, to Walter and Ellen (Park) Head. He attended Utley High School and graduated from Ainsworth High School in 1963. Walt married Sue Scott on May 29, 1976. He had resided in Montrose since 1994, coming from Grand Blanc. Walt was formerly employed at Chevrolet Truck & Bus and served as a Union representative for UAW Local 598. He was a former member of the Montrose Board of Education and was the founder and longtime board member of the Montrose Sports & Community Hall of Fame. Walt served as head coach of the Saginaw Valley State University baseball team for 32 years. He owns the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference record with 462 conference wins. He also won two NAIA District Titles, three GLIAC championships, and two GLIAC tourney titles. He also led SVSU to four NCAA Division 2 national tournament appearances. Before taking the job at SVSU, Walt led Flint-based Connie Mack teams to six state championships and was the first coach in Michigan to win a Connie Mack World Series title. He was also a former professional scout for the Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays baseball teams. Walt also coached amateur baseball for 17 years, from 1967-1982. Walt also a founder of the Sam Duncan Memorial Scholarship Fund in Flint. This award offered scholarships to persons with physical disabilities for the purpose of education or training. He was inducted into the Greater Flint Sports Hall of Fame and the SVSU Athletics Hall of Fame. After retiring from SVSU, Walt also coached youth amateur baseball in Flint.

Surviving are Wife, Sue; 4 children: Christian (Merlin) Bush of Grand Blanc, Steven (Dr. Randi) Head of Chicago, Scott Head of Montrose, and Chelci Stockard – Head of Montrose; 2 grandchildren: Brittani (Jim) Desrochers and Brandon (Kimmy) Bush; 8 great-grandchildren; Father, Walter (Jean) Head of Flushing; Special family friend who was like a son, Eric Lee; 3 brothers, 4 sisters, and several nieces, nephews, and many special friends. Walt was preceded in death by his mother, Ellen, and husband Jim Pellerin, and his beloved dog, Buster.
