On September 14, there will be a private funeral at Great Lakes National Cemetery followed by a wake from 1-2 pm at Kirkridge Presbyterian Church with a memorial service at 2 pm followed by a celebration of Peter at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club from 3-6 pm.
Peter was born in Detroit in 1938 and grew up in and around Flint. Even at a young age he had a gleam in his eye and was known for his somewhat unique sense of humor and well-deserved reputation for mischief. He graduated from Cranbrook School for Boys in 1957 and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Science from the University of Michigan in 1961. Peter was the fourth generation of his family to attend medical school at the University of Toronto graduating in 1966. He met Judy, the love of his life, while in medical school. He came back to Flint with his new bride to complete his residency at Hurley Hospital in radiology. From 1970-72, he proudly served in the United States Air Force at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas and was discharged from the service with the rank of Major. After his service in the Air Force, Peter returned to Flint where he built his practice known as Roentgen Associates which at its height consisted of three separate offices located in and around Flint and employed nearly 50 people. He was also the Chief of Medicine for Wheelock Memorial Hospital in Goodrich for many years. For more than 40 years Peter practiced with an incredible work ethic and attention to the minute details of the x-rays and scans he read. He was known for taking the time to talk with his patients and his great compassion particularly when called upon to deliver bad news regarding a diagnosis or medical condition.
In his youth, Peter spent many summers at the family cottage on Lake Fenton cruising in his J.C. Higgins speedboat and learning how to play Gin, Bridge, Cribbage and Poker from a group of older gentlemen who needed a fourth. His love of cards continued throughout his life and he was well known for his success to the annoyance of friends and family alike. Peter was an avid golfer and spent countless hours attempting to fine tune his game on the fairways and greens of Warwick Hills. He was also a huge fan of Michigan sports and was heard to shout “Oh Michigan!” at the television on more than one occasion. Peter was a voracious reader with a preference for the works of authors like Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler and Robert Ludlum. Many people received his often unsolicited views on life and appreciated the honesty if not the sentiment. Over the course of his life, Peter lived by the mantra “Carpe Diem” and he seized every day with the belief that you face life head on come what may.
Peter loved and adored his family. He was so blessed to share 58 years of marriage with Judy and cherished the life they built. Although challenging at times, he enjoyed raising his three sons and rarely missed a football game or swim meet. He was very proud of the men they grew up to be. He loved his daughters-in-law dearly and was incredibly proud of his 11 grandchildren and amazed at each of their unique talents. Even through the challenges of his last few months of life, Peter’s eyes lit up and he smiled often whenever his family came to visit. He had a gleam in his eye to the end.
Peter was preceded in death by his parents Kenneth W. A. McLeod, M.D. and Evelyn Campbell McLeod, his brother Ian and his sister Laurie (Hetchler). For those desiring to make a contribution in his honor, the family suggests the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org; Kirkridge Presbyterian Church; or Ronald McDonald House at rmhc.org.
