LeBLANC, Martin P. “Marty” - of Davison, age 68, died peacefully after a lengthy illness surrounded by his family at his home on Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023.
Marty was born on Oct. 7, 1955, in Flint, Michigan, the son of Paul and Norma (Crawford) LeBlanc. Marty was the quintessential baby boomer, as Paul, a WWII veteran, and Norma produced seven children, six within a six-year span in the 1950s. Although two of his siblings died as infants, Marty’s childhood was spent in a cramped Eastside Flint home, with a total of five siblings within six years of each other.
The five siblings, who remained a close-knit group throughout the years perhaps despite that cramped upbringing, filled the house with chaos and a bunch of broken things that maybe mother Norma should not have left out where they could be broken. Although, as most of the chaos occurred in the 1960s, the threat of the use of a wooden spoon quelled most dissent. Outside of the home at the time, Flint was thriving. Marty spent his childhood sledding and driving miniature cars at Safetyville in Kearsley Park, eating coneys at Angelo’s and pizza at Luigi’s, and being part of major shopping trips to Downtown Flint.
More than a big house and unbroken things, Marty’s parents valued education. He attended St. Mary’s Elementary School and graduated from Flint Powers High School in 1974. His excellent early education, in addition to exceptional parenting, eventually led to a very successful corporate career. Marty followed his high school graduation with a rather leisurely attempt at earning a degree in business at Eastern Michigan University.
Somehow, someway Marty found his way in college to earning a degree in the burgeoning field of business-based computer programming. He thrived in the field, quickly climbing the corporate ladder at Amoco/BP in mostly managerial positions based in Chicago and Des Moines, Iowa. His amazing lakeview condominiums in Chicago were about as far removed as you could be from the eastside of Flint. Even farther away, Marty’s job took him to the far-flung, oil-rich regions of the world, including the Middle East and Africa.
Never married, and having no children of his own, Marty very generously and thoughtfully used the fruits of his success to lavish his parents, siblings, nephews, niece, near and distant relatives, and friends with gifts well beyond anything he could ever hope to receive in return. The gift imbalance got so bad that a guideline had to be put in place so that Marty’s gifts were always opened last; the rest of us didn’t want our sweater vests and gift cards to be revealed after a wonderful gift from Marty was opened.
Marty had many long-term friendships with those he had met growing up, and during his time in Chicago and Des Moines. His closest and dearest friend was Jay Eccleston, who was a walking joystorm of a person who was sadly taken from us in 2019. Marty and Jay shared apartments for many years, and also shared binges of bad Netflix programming, Marty’s often-risky attempts at daring food recipes, the daily dish, and their lives. After Jay’s death, Marty moved back to Michigan and renewed his efforts to break stuff with his siblings.
Marty was preceded in death by his parents; infant siblings, Matthew and Laura; sister-in-law, Kathyrn LeBlanc in July 2023; and Jay.
He is survived by sisters, Sandy of Burton and Annette (Doug) of Flint; brothers, Brian of Traverse City and Dan (Dena) of Roscommon; nephews, Paul Andrew “Andy”, Sean (Nonie), and Matthew; and niece, Sarah.
Marty’s warmth, joy, and extreme generosity of spirit will be sadly missed. His influence and impact on the lives he touched will endure.
Per Marty’s wishes, no public memorial service will be held.
