Ballenger Hwy on April 4, 2026, at 3:00 PM, please save the date. Kathleen Annette Jones, 91, a devoted wife, mother and cherished friend, was born April 2, 1934, to the late Leon E. James and Carrie James in Detroit, Michigan. Carrie passed away young and Berniece James continued raising her. Kathleen departed this life on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at Willowbrook Manor. Kathleen asked that the family memorialize her with a Musical Celebration. We are overjoyed that we will be able to show her gifts through those she taught, accompanied and mentored through the years. Kathleen attended Detroit Public Schools, attended Northwestern and graduated from Cass Tech High School. Having studied and played piano since the age of five, she later studied Music at The Detroit Institute of Musical Arts and the Chicago University School of Music. She also studied organ at St. Matthew Episcopal Church. She met her husband, the late Samuel P. Jones, Jr. in Chicago and as he was a United Methodist minister, they resided and served in six states, where he pastored and she was the musician/choir director at each of his assignments. They lovingly raised six children and the family finally settled in Flint in 1968. Over the next six decades, Kathleen served as organist, pianist, music director or choir director at several United Methodist Churches including E.L. Gordon, Bethel, Charity, Oak Park and Trinity. Kathleen was employed at NBD Genesee Bank, retiring in 1991 and also served in numerous volunteer capacities including YWCA Board, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and numerous K-12 school initiatives in support of her children. Kathleen was also a member of Zeta Amicae, American Guild of Organists, St. Cecelia Society, Media Women, Music Director for the original McCree Theatre productions in the 1970” s, pianist for Rotary Club meetings, New Vic’s Supper Theatre, Flint Community Players, accompanied the Southwestern High School Choir and other organizations dedicated to the arts. Kathleen was so dedicated during Christmas season when she was asked almost yearly to play for Handel’s Messiah productions which was a challenge she looked forward to. Kathleen dedicated over 40 years to teaching piano and then organizing recitals at the end of each year. So many families sent two or three generations to learn from Kathleen and so many became lifelong friends. Those who knew Kathleen considered her to be patient, sweet and ever supportive. To her, everyone was “Sweetheart”. Kathleen Jones leaves to cherish her memories: children: sons Deon Jones (Minneapolis MN), Norman Jones (Duck) of Honolulu HI, and D. Harston Jones (Atlanta GA). Daughters: LaDonna Gamble (Flint), Stephanie Jones (James Hickman) Flint. Grandchildren- Fred Jones, Tim Jones, Anthony Gamble, Trevor Gamble and Ayanna Claybrooks. Eleven Great-Grandchildren and one great great granddaughter; several nieces and nephews and numerous cousins and friends. Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband Samuel P. Jones Jr., daughter Kay Listra Jones and brother William H. James. The Family would like to extend special thanks to Willowbrook Manor staff, McLaren Hospice Care, Bethel United Methodist Church- Rev. Naylo Hopkins, Pastor. Also Rev. Gregory Timmons and Rev. Faith Timmons. |
