Patsy Smith was born on July 18th, 1937 in West Branch Michigan to Almon and Laurabelle Towner. At 14 years of age the family moved to Burton Michigan. Patsy worked at the old Burton Theater and the Ritz drive-in diner while attending Bendle High School from which she graduated in 1955.
After graduation Patsy married John King and they had one son, Jeffrey. They divorced in 1966. In 1968, Patsy married John Smith. And lovingly accepted his four children, William, Rene'e, Edward, and Barry as her own. John preceded her in death in 2017.
Patsy worked 30 years for GM, retiring in 1991. Soon after, she started volunteering for the Red Cross. She was hired by the Red Cross to manage warehouses for disaster relief. She spent almost 5 years in Louisiana for Hurricane Katrina. She struck up a great working relationship with the Southern Baptist relief team and together they fed thousands of hurting people.
She also was in NY right after 9/11. Where she was in charge of millions of dollars. Some of her duties including find rental cars, organizing hundreds of volunteers, finding clean linen and sheets, working with the fire fighters and police, finding pads for the cadaver dogs because the concrete was burning their feet. In appreciation for her hard work, she was given a special Gone but not forgotten hoodie by the NYPD/NYFD.
She spent another 4 years in Church Falls, Virginia. She had no problem doing whatever needed to be done, including fork truck driving. She retired not long after that to be closer to her family.
Patsy's life was one of hard work and service to others. She was feisty, sassy, wonderfully sarcastic, and funny. She was extremely compassionate about others. Many of her Red Cross days were spent crying over the loss her clients had experienced.
She was a proud member of Ainsworth Baptist Church and clung to the belief that God's only Son, Jesus, was her Lord and Savior and died to paid the debt for her sins and that God raised His Son from the dead and she too would be resurrected.
She is survived by her son, Jeffrey (Lisa) King, son William (Chris) Smith, daughter Rene'e (Jim) Dikos, son Edward (Pam) Smith, and son Barry (Laurie) Smith. Granddaughters, Janelle King (Adam) Bodnar, Jillian (Steve) Mahalick, Sandi (Paul) Buchanan, Joann (Greg) Desana, Christie Smith, Lindsay (Jeff) Murphy, Jessica Smith, Stevie (J.R.) Addison, and grandsons, Jimmy Dikos, Bryan Smith, Greg Smith and Brad Smith.
13 great grandchildren, Breckin, Lenore, Colton, Aven, Weston, Brayden, Adam, Whitney, Acein, Ella, Kaden, Charli, Oaklynn, and baby Addison.
Sister, Sal (Joe) Dimick. Nieces, Teresa (Phil) Grace and Betty (Tom) Tebo.
Unfortunately, in her last three years, she was stricken with dementia and unable to remember all the places she had been, the experiences
she had lived, even the people that she loved.
The family would like to thank the staff at Cranberry Park Memory Care in Clio, where Patsy was a resident for the last couple of years.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be honored if you donated your time and your resources to your favorite charity or school, police, fire, or other organization. Make a difference, be a difference in someone else's life.
