Died: 4/2/2025
Age: 78
Community: Burton, MI

With deep love and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Thomas Gary Pierson, Sr., who left this world peacefully at the age of 78 at his home in Zephyrhills, Florida. A creative soul and devoted family man, he lived a life filled with craftsmanship, curiosity, and love.

A proud graduate of Flint Central High School, he found joy in football and wrestling—sports that helped shape the coach and mentor he would later become. He worked at General Motors beginning in 1965, dedicating decades of hard work and heart to his trade. As a model maker and metal spinner, he transformed pewter, copper, brass, and silver into true works of art. His hands were always busy creating treasures, his passion for art woven deeply into everything he made.

He was a rock collector with a well-worn backpack, always on the lookout for a new addition to his collection. He loved to travel and explore—adventures in Hawaii and Alaska, and countless camping trips with family, filled his life with joy and stories to share. Zephyrhills, Florida, became a beloved home for half the year, where sunshine and community brought him peace.

Above all, he loved being a grandfather. Whether chaperoning field trips, cheering at sports games, or simply being there, his presence was constant and full of warmth. He also proudly coached wrestling for his sons, passing along his strength, discipline, and love of the sport.

He also had a quiet, endearing hobby—collecting pennies—finding value in the smallest things, just as he did in life.

Thomas Gary Pierson, Sr. leaves behind a legacy of love, craftsmanship, and quiet adventure. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Thomas leaves behind his loving wife of 59 ½ years, Virginia; sons Thomas Gary, Jr. (Janet) and Gary Thomas; grandchildren Katelyn, Noah, and Joshua (Gigi); great-grandson Jacob; brother-in-law Bernie Dodd; sister-in-law Dorothy Pierson and several nieces and nephews.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Thelma, brothers Richard Jr. and Glen and nephew Duane Pierson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Open Door United Methodist Church or Burton Humane Society.

A memorial service for Thomas will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 11:00AM at Open Door United Methodist Church – 4010 Lippincott Boulevard, Burton, Michigan, with a memorial visitation one hour prior. The officiant will be Pastor Kim Metzer.
