Virgil was born in Flint, MI on October 1, 1964, son of the late Virgil E. and Edna M. (Lotz) Phelps. He was a graduate of Kearsley High School Class of 1982. A man of many passions and talents, Virgil was known for his deep love of sports and his lifelong commitment to community. He was a prolific bowler and a dedicated baseball and softball umpire, always bringing fairness and integrity to the games he oversaw. He enjoyed golfing, bass fishing, and spending time jazzing up of his beloved 2017 Chevrolet Camaro SS Coupe—hobbies that reflected both his appreciation for the outdoors and his hands-on spirit. Virgil worked for many years at Nexteer in Saginaw, MI, where he was a respected colleague and a loyal employee. Beyond his professional life, he was a devoted son who cared for his mother with unwavering love and dedication. His greatest joy came from sharing sports with his family. He cherished attending Flint Generals hockey games with his father and made lasting memories at University of Michigan football games in The Big House, surrounded by friends and loved ones. Virgil also proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1982-1988, where he was involved in the testing of the Pershing II ballistic missile. He was honorably discharged in 1988, carrying the values of discipline, patriotism, and duty with him throughout his life. Virgil’s presence, laughter, and loyalty will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His life was marked by kindness, humility, and a deep love for those around him.
Virgil is survived by his brother, Eric (DanaLynn) Phelps; 2 nephews, Mitchell Don Phelps and Sawyer Eric Phelps; cousin, Cynthia; aunt, Dorothy Jarrett; niece, Dawn; many other loving family members and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil E. and Edna M. Phelps; 2 sisters, Valerie Phelps and Diana Dibble; uncle, Chuck Jarrett; paternal grandparents, Lloyd and Martha (Stockberger) Phelps; maternal grandparents, Raymond and Sylvia Lotz.
