C. Edward White Jr. died peacefully on June 29, 2023 at home cared for by his wife of 32 years, Brenda Fortunate. He was enrolled in Compassus Hospice.
Ed was born on March 24, 1937 in Emlyn, Kentucky and moved to Knoxville when he was ten. He was an avid photographer and started his own photography business when he was 14, photographing weddings and school dances. He retained his love of photography throughout his life. Ed was the first in his family to attend college, and graduated in 1963 with an accounting degree from the University of Tennessee after serving honorably in the United States Air Force for four years. He was interviewed and offered a job by all of the Big 8 accounting firms. He took a job at S. D. Leidesdorf & Company in New York City. After six years there, he was hired by Irwin Management Company in Columbus, Indiana. Ed spent the last 38 years of his career as President of MFO Management Company in Flint, retiring at age 76.
Ed’s passion was duplicate bridge. He traveled extensively to compete in the game he loved. His favorite tournament was the Bermuda Regional. Ed attained the rank of Platinum Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League. In 2013, he came heartbreakingly close to winning a national championship that would have conferred the title of Grand Life Master. Ed referred to the final board upset as “my misery.”
Few people knew Ed was an accomplished piano player, favoring the works of Chopin.
Ed and his first wife Alma Jean “Jeannie” Martin had three kids together, twins David and DeAnna, and daughter Kelly. They were married for 17 years before divorcing in 1978. Ed and his second wife, Mary Jo Chiesa (Quigley) were married for 5 years before divorcing in 1985 and had daughter Lindsey together. Mary Jo, Brenda, and Ed got along very well, sharing many special family events, holidays, and even vacations together.
Ed is survived by his loving wife Brenda and his three daughters, DeAnna White of Daytona Beach, FL, Kelly White (David Timoner) of Los Angeles, CA, and Lindsey White (David McMurray) of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren Chad White, Eli Owen and Gigi Timoner, Adelaide Emlyn, Charlotte Jo, and David John Edward (Jack) McMurray; and great-grandchildren Faith White McDermott and Kiah-Marie Berge. Ed is also survived by his brother-in-law, Don Fortunate, his wife Joni and their daughter Brianna Rose. He is predeceased by his brothers, Charles “Chick” and Jerry White, his son David White, his grandson Daine White, and his granddaughter Teresa Rose White.
The family thanks Dr. Renee Krusniak and her staff for their excellence and compassion. Many friends provided help and support during Ed’s illness. Special mention goes to Howard and Rochelle who were always there.
A memorial is planned. Those wishing to honor Ed’s memory may do so with a contribution to the American Contract Bridge League’s Educational Foundation or the Flint Symphony Orchestra.
