NEWMAN, Verl Russell - a lifelong resident of Clio, age 99, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 12, 2026. Funeral services will be held at 11AM Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the O'Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio. Mark Thompson officiating. Burial to follow in West Vienna Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Friday from 5PM until 8PM, and on Saturday from 10AM until the time of service at 11AM. A Masonic Service will be held at 7PM Friday evening at the funeral home.
Verl was born on May 16, 1927, in Clio, Michigan, to the late Manley and Wilma (Kittle) Newman and worked on the family farm. He worked at Neeland's Hardware during high school and graduated from Clio High School with the Class of 1946. After high school, he was drafted in the U.S. Army and honorably served his country while stationed in Japan and Korea. After his service, Verl worked for Buick was was accepted into GMI where he simultaneously worked for Hank Graff Chevrolet. Verl began a long career with IBM, where he worked as a customer engineer specializing in typewriters for 33 years before retiring. Alongside his career with IBM, he also served his community part-time as the Vienna Township Clerk. In 1984 after retirement, Verl was elected to serve full-time as Vienna Township Supervisor, a role in which he became well liked and deeply respected by those he served and strongly encouraged all parties to cooperate for the better good of the people. His picture and gavel remain proudly displayed on the wall at the township as a lasting reminder of his many years of service and dedication to the community. On June 25, 1949, Verl married the love of his life, Susan King. Together they enjoyed 76 years until Susan's passing on February 1, 2024.
Verl played an integral role in the growth and development of his community and was instrumental in the development of the Clio Amphitheater. Throughout his life, he generously shared his time, skills, and knowledge with those around him. A natural problem solver, Verl used his ingenuity and craftsmanship to build, repair, and create, including several houses in Clio and two beautiful cottages on Lake Huron. Whether lending his expertise to a building project or helping restore a car, Verl was always willing to put his talents to good use for others. Verl was an avid car enthusiast who enjoyed restoring and building antique and classic vehicles from the frame up. Among his many projects were two handcrafted, oak-bodied Model T-1s, one of which was featured in the Michigan-filmed movie Alleged and driven by Verl's oldest grandson. He also restored several brass-era cars, including a 1910 Cadillac that was his favorite and remains in the family today. His collection of projects also included a speedster and a Model AA dump truck, each reflecting the craftsmanship, patience, and attention to detail Verl brought to everything he built.
Verl's love of automobiles brought him many wonderful friendships and connections over the years. He was involved with several car clubs, including Brass and Gas Car Club, and, most recently, the Script A Club. Verl and Susan enjoyed many years of car tours together, traveling across the country, sharing stories with fellow enthusiasts, and making friends wherever they went. His passion for automobiles was something he proudly passed along to several members of his family. Verl's involvement extended well beyond his love of cars. He was a member of Rotary International and a devoted Master Mason with Vienna Lodge #205. With an incredible 77 years of service, Verl held the distinction of being the lodge's longest-serving Master Mason. Above all, family was at the heart of Verl's life, some of his fondest memories were made on yearly family vacations. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community he proudly called home.
Surviving are: Daughters: Kathleen Zinn, Sally Newman, and Cheryl Larkin; Grandchildren: Travis (Stacie) Belill, Jared Petiprin (Claire Guerra), Rory Petiprin (Ali Bunting), Julia Petiprin (Ryan Hall), Suzanne Hudson, Cheryl Czach, Gregory (Sylvia) Samanez Larkin, Allison Larkin; Great grandchildren: Devon Belill, Austin (Alycia) Belill, Ebin Petiprin, Gabriel Petiprin, Ethan Verl-Duane Petiprin, Bayliegh Petiprin, Lochlann Hudson, Aleksandra Hudson, Josephine Samanez Larkin, Magnolia Samanez Larkin, and Clementine Samanez Larkin; Great-great grandchildren: Brodie Belill, Tatum Belill, Oakland Belill, and Adaline Belill; Sister, Doris Myers; Brother, Laverne Newman; Many loving nieces, nephews, other family members and dear friends.
