Donald Jay Wells, age 94, of Davison, formerly of Lapeer, died Sunday August 10, 2025. He was born November 12, 1930 in Pontiac, to Martillow “Tilly” and Ethel (Brooke) Wells.
Don attended Pontiac and Mayville Schools. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, during the Korean War, as an artillery repairman. As soon as he returned from military service, Don hired in with General Motors at the Fisher Body Plant on Coldwater Road. He worked over 37 years for GM in skilled trades, as a machinist and die maker. Don was a member of the UAW Local #326, where he had many dear friends…attending regular retiree breakfasts and lunches.
Don married Nancy (White) Malhado on July 6, 1985, at Grace Episcopal Church in Lapeer. They were longtime members of Grace Episcopal Church, where they worked for many many years on the annual Eggroll Sale during Lapeer Days. Don and Nancy also volunteered for many years on the Lapeer Days Committee, helping throughout the festival.
Mr. Wells attended and was a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Grand Blanc. He loved fishing with his dear son, Mike, every day when he came home from work, on Pass Lake here in Lapeer…where they lived when Mike was growing up. Mr. Wells also enjoyed the occasional trip to the casino. Don was a quiet, kind person, but also concerned with taking care of the details. He could tell a good story and was a quick jokester.
Don is survived by his wife: Nancy Wells of Davison; children: Karen (Dan) Goodwin of Grand Blanc, Gary (Cheryl) Malhado, Jr. of Dimondale, MI and Susan (Chris) Winkler of Goodrich; grandchildren: Sarah, Kay (Eddie), John, Alexis (Kristian) and Delaney; and great-grandchildren: Mack, Iva, Olive, Cruz, Archer and Eloise. He was preceded in death by his son: Mike; his first wife; parents: Martillow and Ethel Wells; brother: Darrell Wells and in-laws: Israel and Olive White.
Visitation will be 3-8PM Friday, August 15, 2025, at Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Lapeer. Don’s funeral service will be 11AM Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the funeral home, immediately followed by burial in Hunters Creek Cemetery in Lapeer. The Rev. Jerry Lasley and The Rev.
