JURUS, John “Jackie” James
1927-2017 – Dad/Poppy passed away at home with the support of his dear children early Tuesday morning February 28th. A gentle soul now flying with the angels will be a forever lighthouse to light our way.
John was born in his beloved Hazleton, PA in 1927 to Rose and Louis Jurus, he was the remaining child, the “baby” of 9 brothers and sisters. John was preceded by his loving wife of 52 years, Wanda, in 2015. Survived by children John (Marg) Chelsea, Beth of Redford, Janet (Jonathan) Hughes of Lansing, Jerry (Mary) Amelia and Olivia of South Lyon. John is survived by many very special nieces and nephews. John is an alumnus of the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf and valued his lifelong friendships and experiences, which he spoke of fondly. He also leaves behind a special group of friends in the Flint Deaf community. John was a Skilled Trades Journeyman at GM for nearly 40 years, a member of UAW Local 659. He was sought after for his painting skills for many years in and around the Flint area. He was a proud member of the Flint Association of the Deaf for over 65 years and the Flint Catholic Deaf Group for decades, holding many offices for both. John was a lifelong Penn State fan, an avid horseshoe man, bowler and golfer honing his skills well into his 80’s and never missing an opportunity to give someone an impromptu lesson. John’s love of photography, travel and history led to many youthful adventures and beyond with his family. His theories on wine and spring water will live on.
Family will receive friends and family at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint MI Thursday, March 2, 3pm-8pm Scripture Service 7pm, Officiate Fr. Mike Depcik, OSFS. Funeral Mass Friday, March 3, 11am, visitation 10am Officiate Fr. Steve Anderson (ASL Interpreted) Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1227 East Bristol Road, Burton, MI.
