CHINONIS, Elias D. - Of Grand Blanc, age 90, died Sunday, April 13, 2014 peacefully at home surrounded by his family.

Funeral service will be held 11am Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 2245 East Baldwin Road, Grand Blanc,

Father Angelo Maggos officiating.

Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church care of The Endowment Fund.

Visitation 3-8pm Wednesday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. A Trisagion Service will be held 6pm Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Elias was born in Skortsinu, Greece on March 12, 1924, the son of the late Dionysius and Pagniota (Yeotis) Chinonis and was the oldest of five children. He left Patras, Greece on February 12, 1940 coming to America on February 22, 1940 at the age of 15 through Ellis Island. He attended Walker & Whittier Junior High School. He served in the United States Army from 1943-1946. On November 13, 1949, he married Katie Karay in Detroit. He was a member of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church and Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Clearwater, FL. Elias shined shoes and worked for his uncles, Harry and Gust Yeotis at Tasty Coney Island. He opened the Silver Rail Bar in downtown Flint on Water Street in 1949, where it remained until 1975. He opened Chinonis Chrysler Plymouth Dodge with his son, Dennis in 1970 until 1996. Elias loved the stock market, golf and hunting. His many associations included Archon, Leadership 100, AHEPA, Durkee Lake Hunt Club, Warwick Hills, Masonic Lodge and Belleair Country Club of Clearwater, FL. His favorite place to eat was Katie’s Kitchen.

Surviving are wife, Katie;

children, Dennis and wife Dr. Debra Chinonis of Grand Blanc and Diane and husband Walt Foraker of Clarkston;

grandchildren, Nancy and husband Jeff Lauster of Fenton, Elias of Fenton and Richard of Grand Blanc;

brother, Dr. Pano Chinonis of Athens, Greece, sister, Vaso Hassoulas of Athens Greece and brother, John and wife Linda Chinonis of Fenton;

sister-in-law, Sandy Chinonis of Grand Blanc;

and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Gus Chinonis.
