Mesick - Joseph Scott Lunkas, formerly of Flint, and Mesick's own "The Aging Michigan Outdoorsman" passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was 76.
Joe was born on June 10, 1948, in Flint, Michigan to Joseph Walter and Patricia (Snodgrass) Lunkas. Joe grew up in the Flint area, was a graduate of Northwestern High School in 1966, and went onto college before Uncle Sam drafted him into service. Joe served as a Sergeant in the United States Army during Vietnam. Returning home from his military service Joe went to work with GM. He worked over 40 years with the auto manufacturer as a development engineer at the Milford Proving Grounds, retiring in 2007. Joe entered into marriage to the former Yvonna Toler on August 9, 1985, in Flint, MI. Following retirement the couple were finally able to relocate to their up north property where Joe could truly explore and live out his passion for the outdoors.
In 1978, Joe bagged a State Record Buck, one that still holds the record for the biggest taken by bow in Shiawassee County. Joe enjoyed nature and all it had to offer and nothing could describe it better than his own words as he wrote "I love and live the outdoorsman life and view myself as a steward of the land and its wild inhabitants. My final objective is to do everything in my power to pass on what I've learned to future generations". As an accomplished author and writer of multiple books and articles about the outdoors, we think most would agree that Joe succeeded.
Joe is survived by his wife, Yvonna Lunkas of Mesick; eight children, Elizabeth (Mike) Padgett of Flint, Richard A. Grant, II of Marion, Debra Ann (Ken) Aris of Genesee, Victoria (Joshua Burch) Andrada of Traverse City, Adam S. Lunkas of Grand Blanc, Rachel (Daniel Mills) Shust of Clio, Sarah J. Jones of Grand Blanc, and Krystle (Eric) Sweers of Flushing; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, with another on the way soon; one sister Jane Lunkas of Flint; as well as many other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held for friends and family on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Hall-Holdship Funeral Home.
