Borden, Bernard P. “Bernie” - of Clio, age 88, died Friday, December 22, 2017, at McLaren - Flint. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Thursday, December 28, 2017, at Bethany United Methodist Church in Clio. Pastors Cathi Huvaere and Roger Gedcke officiating. Burial to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery with graveside military honors. The family will receive visitors at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio on Wednesday from 12-9 PM and at the church on Thursday from 10 AM until the time of the service at 11 AM. A masonic memorial service will be held at 7PM Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany United Methodist Church Endowment Fund or the Clio Area Human Services Fund.
Bernie was born March 8, 1929, in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Fred and Opal (Pollard) Borden. He graduated from Clio High School in 1947. Bernie married Betty Babcock on March 25, 1951. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a member of the American Legion Neeley - Labar Post 158 and the Gordon R. Bennett VFW Post 1452 of Clio. Bernie also graduated from Ferris State University College of Pharmacy in 1956 with a B.A. in Science Degree. He owned and operated Borden’s Pharmacy in Clio for nearly 50 years. He was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men’s Group. Bernie was also a longtime member of the Clio Rotary Club. He was a member of the Vienna Lodge #205 F&AM, the Elf Khurafeh Shriners, and the Clio Area Educational Foundation. He was also a Salvation Army Bell Ringer. Bernie was an avid softball player and was inducted into the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame along with two of his softball teams from Borden’s Pharmacy.
Surviving are: Wife, Betty; Grandson, John (Mary) Borden of Clio; 4 great grandchildren: Zachery, Stephen, Tyler, and Tayler; Great-great grandchild, Harper; Sister, Karen May of Santa Fe, NM. Several nieces and nephews. Bernie was also preceded in death by his son, Ted, in 2007 and his brother, Keith.
