William Alonzo Diehl, age 80, of Roscommon, formerly of Mt. Morris, died Saturday, May 26, 2012 surrounded by his family at Brian’s House in Bay City. Visitation will be 2:00 – 8:00 P.M. Monday, May 28th, and funeral services 10 A.M. Tuesday, May 29th officiated by Pastor Dan Stoneback, all at Walsh Funeral Home in Roscommon. Internment will follow at Gerrish Township Cemetery.
He was born in Flint on February 6, 1932 the son of Grover and Donna (Woodcock) Diehl. He married Shirley May Smith of Mt. Morris on August 16, 1952 in Clio. Together they raised two children, Mark William and Vicky Ray.
He served in the United States Navy, and retired from Chevrolet Metal Fabricating as a journeyman tinsmith. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America for over 50 years and was a member of Masonic Lodge #535 of Mt. Morris, Bay City Scottish Rite Consistory and American Legion Post #416 of St. Helen.
William worked hard and played hard. He was an outdoor enthusiast in everyway, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. He was truly passionate about his woodworking and family.
He is survived by his children, Mark William (Sandra) Diehl of Kennesaw, Georgia, and Vicky Ray Diehl of St. Helen; four grandchildren, Donna Ray Diehl of Arlington, Virginia, John William Diehl of Baltimore, Maryland, Melissa Nicole Diehl of Kennesaw, Georgia, and Sara Elizabeth Diehl of Nashville, Tennessee; brother-in-law Glenn (Marilyn) Smith of Grand Rapids, several nieces and nephews, and four-legged pals, Lucy and Scratch.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Shirley on September 26, 2009; a brother and three sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2211 North Oak Park Ave., Chicago, IL 60707-3392.
