PALMER, Betty I. – of Saginaw, age 95, died on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at HealthSource in Saginaw. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Saints Charles and Helena Catholic Church in Clio. Rev. Fr. Kenneth Coughlin officiating. Cremation to follow, with burial this summer at Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette. The family will receive visitors at the church on Thursday from 9:30 AM until time of Mass at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saints Charles and Helena Catholic Church.
Betty was born August 22, 1921 in Marquette, MI to the late John J. and Zella A. (Constance) Smith. She was a resident of Marquette most of her life, then moved to Frankenmuth and most recently resided in Saginaw. She was united in marriage to James Palmer on February 17, 1943. He preceded her in death on August 3, 2000. Mrs. Palmer was a proof reader for the Marquette Mining Journal, then became the first female zookeeper in Michigan at Presque Isle Park. Betty was also the ticket manager for the Marquette Iron Ranger and Marquette Sentinel hockey teams. She was a member of St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette. Betty enjoyed hunting, trout fishing, playing cards and cribbage and was a passionate flower and vegetable gardener.
She is survived by: her Son, Pat (Jan) Palmer of Clio; Grandson, Jason Palmer (Kalisi) of Hayward, CA; Great-Grandson, JaMok; Sister, Madeline Hanson of Marquette; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by Siblings: Helen Hanson, Jack Smith, Bob Smith and Ron Smith. The family extends a special thanks to the staff at Health Source in Saginaw for their loving care.
