In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Flushing Riverview Trail in hopes that we can erect a garden bench in Shirley’s honor for all to enjoy.

Shirley was born in 1935 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, daughter of Carl and Lavina (Bethune) Adams. At age 16 she came to Flint, Michigan and attended Flint Central High School. During school she worked at the Maas Brothers and The Vogue in downtown Flint. She also worked at Dupont and then spent most of her career with Genesee Bank (now Chase Bank) where she retired in 1998. Shirley had too much energy for retirement so she continued working in the office of Highlands Mobile Home Park for several years.

On Sunday, February 24th she died peacefully in her home at the young age of 83. On that day our family lost the most amazing, caring woman, mother and grandmother that the world has ever known. She never met a soul that did not fall in love with her. Shirley was young beyond her years, independent, witty and she battled with courage and positivity to stay on this earth with those who loved her so dearly. While she had many interests and hobbies her greatest pride was being involved with the lives of her son, daughter-in-law, daughter, and son-in-law, four grandsons, one granddaughter and everyone’s spouses or significant other. She was always abreast of the current goings-on in each of our lives. She was an amazing listener and a friend as much as parent or grandparent. She could offer advice without judgement. She loved deeply and found the good in every day.

Shirley is survived by one son Matthew and wife Tracy Catlin of Flushing. Daughter Kelly and husband Jack Sanders of Flushing. Grandson Justen Sanders, grandson Michael Catlin and wife Morgan, granddaughter Ashleigh (Sanders) and husband Josh Minore, grandson Joshua Sanders, granddaughter Jane Jaksa, all from Flushing, and grandson Travis Catlin of Lafayette, Indiana, and her only great-granddaughter Murphy Catlin of Flushing. Also many special friends.
