ALEXANDER, VIRGIL C. – Of Flint, Age 92, passed away on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at McLaren-Flint, surrounded by family. The service will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, with Reverend Maurice Horne officiating. Interment will be at Crestwood Memorial Cemetery, 2020 E. Hill Road, Grand Blanc, with a military graveside service under the auspices of VFW Chevrolet Motor Post #3087 Honor Guard.
Virgil was born on February 22, 1921 in Bloomfield, Missouri, son of the late William and Effie (Miller) Alexander, one of nine children in a rural farming family. He graduated from Puxico (Missouri) High School in 1941. He then served in the Civilian Construction Corps before joining the U.S. Navy in 1942, serving shipboard in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters during invasions and kamikaze attacks. Leaving the Navy in 1946, he began work with General Motors in Flint, where he worked just over 40 years until retirement in 1986. He married Doris Lee in 1961, and she preceded him in death in 1988. Also preceding him in death were his eight siblings, Minnie, Alta, Ralph, Ray, Velma, James, Carl and Bill.
Virgil very much enjoyed fishing, Tigers baseball, shooting pool, church events and watching PGA golf, but he was first and foremost a devoted and sincere family man. He always welcomed all who came to his door, and was perhaps happiest at family gatherings. His modesty and enthusiasm for being with and supporting others was inspirational to many, as he led by example rather by decree. His devotion to family, plus his attendance record at GM, was such that when he once requested a mid-week day off, his supervisor knew to ask “So who’s graduating or getting married this time?”
Virgil also bravely and cheerfully took on the role of stepfather to Doris’ five children, and was a caring and supportive stepdad, grandpa and great-grandpa. Surviving Virgil are stepchildren Janell Reeves of Flint, Diane (Michael) McNea of Swartz Creek, Jerry (Susan) Lee of Albuquerque, NM, many nephews and nieces both near and far, grandchildren Edward, John Jr., Andrea (Carl), Andrew and Nicole (Neal), and great-grandchildren Skylar and Colton (with a third great-grandchild currently under construction). He was preceded in death by stepchildren John Lee of Flint and Bethany Ratliff of Detroit.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Lincoln Park Methodist Church.
