MAHNKE, Gary L., of Linden, a kind-hearted, soft-spoken, loving soul; a loyal friend and family man; full of life and laughter, at age 66, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2011. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton. Pastor Gloria Watson and Mr. Robert Seeley officiating. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Linden. Visitation will be Thursday 5:00-9:00 p.m. and Friday 1:00-4:00 and 6:00-9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In Lieu of Flowers, contributions may be made to Gary Mahnke Memorial Fund. Gary was born March 28, 1945 in Clovis, New Mexico but grew up in Flint, Michigan. He attended Dort and Garfield Schools, Emerson Jr. High and graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1963. He served with much pride in the United States Navy aboard the USS Rigel AF-58 from 1963 to 1966 as a Boatswains Mate. He met the love of his life and married Anne R. Tanner on December 16, 1966 at Parkland Presbyterian Church in Flint. They moved to Linden in 1973. He was a member of A.F.L.-C.I.O. Local 119 Utility Workers Union of America. He retired from Consumers Power Company on July 1, 2004 with 34 years of service. He started what he referred to as his "fun job", working on the Train as a "Brakeman" on the Huckleberry Railroad at Crossroads Village in 2002. He then became a "Conductor" in 2008. He was a Past Commander and life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4642 of Linden for five consecutive years. He was also Master Mason pre-paid Life Member in Linden Lodge 132 F. & A.M. He was also a member and Vice President of the "Linden Mills Historical Society and Museum". What he was most proud of was in 2010 the City of Linden proclaimed him as "Citizen of the Year". Within the past year, Gary was appointed and elected City Councilman of Linden. He was known far and wide and had friends from every walk of life. This world will be a sadder place without him. His memory will be cherished by the lucky ones who knew him: his loving wife, Anne of 45 years; his three daughters, Aimee and husband, Robert Seeley of Zeeland, Denise Mahnke-Pugh of Howell, Julie and husband, Mark Hansen of Rochester Hills; five grandchildren, four beautiful granddaughters, Kathryn Elise, Emily Erinn, Natalie Anne and Jillian Alise and his grandson and special Train Buddy, Jack Henry.
