Age 89 of Owosso passed away Thursday, April 23, 2015 at Memorial Healthcare.
Funeral services will be held 11am Saturday, April 25, 2015 at Christ Episcopal Church, Owosso with Pastor Russ Merrill officiating. Burial will take place at West Haven Cemetery, Owosso, at a later date. The family will receive friends Friday, April 24, 2015 from 2-4pm, and 6-8pm at Nelson-House Funeral Homes, Owosso Chapel and Saturday at the church from 10am until the time of service. Masonic Service will be held at 7pm.
Jim was born March 29, 1926 in Owosso, the son of Jay and Ellen (Workman) Slingerland. He graduated from Owosso High School and attended Central Michigan University. Jim had worked at Universal Electric (Magnetek) for over 34 years, serving in several capacities including personnel, industrial engineering and as plant manager. In his retirement years, he also sold real estate for Crabb Reality in Owosso.
He had been a member of the Shriners, Corunna Blue Lodge, F. & AM, Elks club, Rotary Club, Christ Episcopal Church and served as a past Chairman of the Shiawassee County American Red Cross where he was instrumental in building the current Red Cross Building. He was also active in the Shiawassee United Way, Shiawassee District Boy Scouts, the YMCA, Owosso Board of Review and served as President of the Shiawassee Board of Realtors.
Jim married Josephine Dedic in Owosso on January 22, 1949.
Jim is survived by his wife Jo; son James (Mary) Slingerland Jr., daughters Jodi (Don) Marrah and Jayne (Bill) Brown; Grandchildren Jay (Alisa) Slingerland, Katie Marrah, Erin (Ryan) Jankovic, Emily Marrah, Bill Brown and Jack Brown; Great-Grandchildren Brayden and Carson Jankovic and Kaleigh Slingerland. Sister in-law Jo (Gerard) Slingerland. He was pre-deceased by his parents, and brother Jerry (of Ionia).
Memorial contributions are suggested to Christ Episcopal Church or the Memorial Healthcare Foundation.
