Joan was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on January 18, 1935, the daughter of Herbert A. and Margaret E. (Farley) Cannon. She was devoted to her family and to helping other people live well in health, nutrition, and education, culture, and the arts. She had a brilliant mind for science and numbers, and a passion for ballet dancing, which she practiced well into her adult years. Her devotion to helping people and humanitarian efforts began early on. When she was a cadet in the Royal Canadian Air Force, she had dreams of going on to work for the World Health Organization. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto in 1955, and moved to Michigan to attend Michigan State University, where she received a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry and Nutrition. While attending MSU, she met her future husband Dean E. Haley (on a blind date to a football game), and they were married on August 29, 1959, in West Hill, Ontario, Canada. For eight years she worked - teaching nutrition at The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor Dental School, and Mott Community College - and then took time off to raise her daughters. She went back to work in 1978, with the Genesee County Health Department as a Public Health Nutritionist in the WIC program. She was devoted to helping pregnant mothers and parents learn how to nourish themselves and their children, and took great joy in helping them learn how to thrive. Joan retired in Fall 1999, and devoted her life to helping her children and grand children thrive in their interests in the performing arts, public health, and education. She became a United States citizen in 1993.
Joan loved to garden and she loved to cook. She loved to read novels, and regularly made short work of crossword and Sudoku puzzles. She was an astonishing card player and adored playing board games. She loved to travel with her husband and family. She loved to spend time up north in Michigan and Ontario; she was a skilled swimmer, and loved to take long swims in lakes and pools. She cherished her church home, First Presbyterian Church of Flint. She never missed a theatre performance or music/choir/dance concert of her daughters and granddaughters. Joan was a devoted donor and patron of local performing arts& humanities institutions. She never held back from showing up and doing what was needed to help. Joan loved to laugh. Joan cherished living life with a full and generous heart, and she was devoted to helping others do so, in mind, body, and spirit.
Joan is survived by her daughters, Janet Elaine Haley, Barbara Jean (Haley) Ehrhart and husband Dale Ehrhart; granddaughters, Rachel and Nicole Ehrhart; brother, James and wife Leslie Cannon of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada; sister, Carol (Cannon) Brown of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada; several nieces and nephews; close friends, Janet and Terry Lake and Pam Ehrhart. She was preceded in death by her dear brother-in-law, Gerry Brown.
