Stokes, Mr. Luther, Jr. age-82 passed away Wednesday March 15, 2017 at Heartland
Healthcare Center-Briarwood. Funeral services will be held at 11am Thursday March
23, 2017 from the Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle 930 E. Myrtle Ave. Rev. Herbert
Miller II officiating. Interment Gracelawn Cemetery 5710 N. Saginaw St. Family and
friends will assemble at the church 10:30am for visitation. Mr. Stokes will repose in the
Chapel of the Martin J. Banks Funeral Home after 12noon Tuesday until 6pm
Wednesday.
Mr. Luther Stokes, Jr. was born July 3, 1934 in Pelahatchie, Mississippi the son of
Luther and Emily (Ward) Stokes, Sr. He was a member of the Member of the
Metropolitan Church Family and was a retired employee of General Motors (Fisher
Body #1) and was a member of UAW local #581. Mr. Stokes was educated in the Flint
Community Schools attending Fairview Elementary and graduating from Northern High
School. He enjoyed spending time at the Hasselbring Sr. Citizens Center where he
respected as the best at shooting pool and enjoyed checkers and playing cards. His
favorite home game was Solitaire.
He leaves to cherish his memory wife Lizzie, daughter, Linda (Jimmy) Orr, 2 sons
Walter and Anthony Stokes 4 step children Brenda Johnson, Billy (Glenda) Alexander,
Stephanie Alexander all of Flint, Steve (Tonya) Alexander of Warren, Michigan, 7
grandchildren, Latwanda (Fred), Samuel Charles, Demetrius, Jonathon, Andre, Marvin
and Michael, Jr. ,numerous of great grandchildren, sister Ruby Banks, of Flint, Mi.
Aunts, Sarah Vawters of Bellamy, Al., Rosie Neal Gulley of Meridian, Ms. and Velma
Ward of Tx., uncle Leon (Jean)Ward of Indianapolis, Ind., niece Gloria Watson of
Flushing, Mi. 5 nephews Van Roberts, Joseph Banks of Charlotte N. Carolina, Raphael
Banks, Sheldon and Martin Banks and Scott Watson, sister-in-law Mary Flippen of Flint,
Mi., brother-in-law, James Alexander of Bremen,Ga. and cousin Mary Jerido of Mt.
Vernon, New York. A host of other relatives and friends survive. Mr. Stokes was
preceded in death by his son Michael, parents, mother of his children Pearlie Mae
Hooker, aunt Lee Ether Campbell-Scott and nephews Hugo Banks and Dan Roberts
and cousin Alma (Terry)Pringle.
