PETERSON, Roy A., Jr. Born June 23, 1922, a true American hero and decorated World War II veteran, piloted his final mission on February 25, 2013 at McLaren Hospital, Flint, MI, after a brief illness.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Reverend Harold K. Polk, Jr. officiating.
Burial in Flint Memorial Park.
Visitation 1-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
He will be missed by his loving family of 8 children, daughters, Paula, Marcia, Patricia, Cynthia, Diana and husband Steven Hodson, Debra and husband Kenneth Ogles; sons, Roy and wife Lori, Pete and wife Lori “Umpteen” (19) grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren, and his sister, Shirley Lockrey.
He was preceded in death by his wonderful wife of 61 years, Dona (Coe) Peterson; daughter, Sandra; brother, Jack Peterson; grandsons, Dale and Donovan Brownfield.
He flew 27 successful missions in his B-24 Liberator named “Pot Luck”, before being shot down and held as a POW for 8 months at Stalag Luft I in Germany. He was a member of the elite Caterpillar Club, a talented carver and woodworker, and employed by Buick Motor Division, Factory 29, retiring in 1977.
He retired with the rank of Captain from the Michigan National Guard, after serving for many years.
Roy was in Heaven on Earth sitting next to a fire in his pole barn, sipping on a glass of wine or a bottle of Corona with a lime, talking over old times.
