Shirley Carleen Best (Woidke), of Flushing, Michigan died peacefully on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at Western Hills Living in Flint, MI. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., at King of Glory Lutheran Church, in Flushing. Her family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service, as well as during a buffet luncheon immediately following. Private interment will be at Great Lakes National Cemetery at a later date.
Shirley was born on January 27, 1930, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Martha (Estella) and Frederick Woidke. She was raised in Cleveland, Ohio where she met and married her loving husband, Richard Hewitt Best, on January 20, 1951, leaving behind a string of broken hearts. Shirley always said that anyone who raised children in the 1960's and 70's deserved a medal. No one was more deserving, as she raised six! A consummate career homemaker, Shirley took great pride in her work. She had a great eye for decorating and exquisite taste. An amazing seamstress, Shirley made dozens of holiday dresses, Halloween costumes, wedding and prom gowns, as well as upholstery and drapery. Nothing ever looked homemade. As Shirley always said, "you may not be a queen, but you'll look like a queen in a dress I've made." She was a history buff, an avid antique collector and lifelong member of The Americana Antique Study Club, introduced to her by her mother-in-law, Fern Best. Her children fondly remember the weeks leading up to her yearly hosting duties, when she would double down on her cleaning and baking preparations, making their lives miserable but teaching them the importance of being well organized, a gracious host, and how to throw a good party. Shirley was a voracious reader, loved a good crossword puzzle and had a wicked sense of humor. She was a longtime member of King of Glory Lutheran Church and a member of the altar guild.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, mother and father-in-law, Lynn and Fern Best, her sister, Martha Juhn, brothers-in-law, Harry Juhn and Dr. John Best, son-in-law, Allan Cislo, great grandson, Mateo Baiza, and her dear friends, Marion Cypher and Phyllis Best. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her devoted husband of 65 years, Richard, her loving children, Pam Cislo, Mark Best and Anne Landgraf, Tom and Lynnette Best, Betsy Best, Amy and Kevin Troyer, and Mary Ann and Nick Vergith. She also leaves behind 14 beloved grandchildren and 10 beautiful great grandchildren. "Family is the most important part of my life. Hopefully with and from your family you will learn to love, to forgive, to laugh, and to accept".--Shirley Best
Shirley's family would like to thank Darla Malone, Victoria Kelly and the staff of Western Hills Living, and Heartland Hospice for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, they ask that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
It's called "The Long Goodbye", but for Richard, it wasn't long enough. We will miss her forever. |
