Carol was born in Bay City, Michigan on May 26, 1929, the first born of Carl and Bernice Rice. On May 26, 1951, she married Gerald Starkey at her home parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church where they raised and educated 3 children: Ann, Jim and Yvonne. In 1978, Gerald's job transferred the couple to Holland, MI. Their 18 years on the western side of the state gained them many dear friends at St. Francis de Sales Parish. Carol was a resident of Flint for the past 21 years and a St. John Vianney parishioner. Carol was an active volunteer at all 3 parishes and in her children's and grandchildren's schools.
Carol's first love was singing and she shared her talent beginning at age 9 by singing in the church choir. She was a cantor and choir member at St. John Vianney Church until Alzheimer's Disease began to interfere with her lifestyle. Carol enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, playing cribbage and storytelling.
A devout Catholic, Carol was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis. Carol was the caretaker to her family and friends and epitomized the Corporal Acts of Mercy.
Surviving are husband Gerald; children: Ann and Michael Saunders, James and Cheryl Starkey, Yvonne and Patrick Greiner; grandchildren: Marguerite and Kevin Tolasch, Alex Saunders, Jarrod and Tyler Starkey, Allena Greiner and her fiance Rex Baummeister and Spencer Greiner; great-grandchildren Alexandria, Christopher, McCauley and McKenzie Tolasch; sisters and brothers: Geraldine Quinn, Alice Weidmann, Sandra and Richard Rathe, Russell and Maria Rice, and Carla Rice; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
