KARR, Josepha Ann
On March 29, 2013 Josepha (Joey) Ann Karr died ending a complete life filled with love for her husband, children, and grandchildren and with the joy of many good friendships. Joey was born March 27, 1937 in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. After high school she attended the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in Philadelphia graduating with a RN degree. It was there she met Paul Karr who was enrolled in the medical school. They were married on December 19, 1958. Joey worked as a nurse in ICU until Paul’s graduation. They then moved to Flint. She continued her career in nursing while he was an intern at Hurley Hospital. In 1961 Paul opened his practice in family medicine in Flint. Joey was his nurse, receptionist and janitor until she “retired” to become a fulltime homemaker and mother excelling at all, especially cooking. She found time to be a homeroom mother (many times), Cub Scout den mother for many years and community council president. In 1980 Joey chaired the committee which organized the first city wide Community Education Day Parade down Saginaw Street. The following year she was the Grand Marshall of the Parade. Joey loved gardening especially growing flowers and of those, roses were her favorite. Her gardens were magnificent. She was a Master Gardener and in 1998 her garden was one of the outstanding gardens showcased on the Genesee County Master Gardener Tour for the public. For over 15 years she guided the St. Joseph Guild tending the beautiful gardens of Holy Redeemer Church. Each summer while the children were living at home, the family would travel to a different location within the United States and Canada. After the children had grown, Paul and Joey expanded their travels and ultimately visited all 50 states, Europe, South America and Australia. Joey loved to host a party, particularly costume parties. They were elaborate and unforgettable. But by far her favorite pastime was being with her grandchildren. There was nothing that she would not do for or with them. Her favorite was an annual trip to Cedar Point where she would join them on all the highest, steepest and fastest roller coasters. Joey had many friends. A friendship with Joey was special. Her caring and giving ways enhanced the lives of all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, Paul Karr; daughter, Ann Kuhl; sons, Paul Karr, Jr. (Sandra), and Joseph Karr (Michelle); six grandchildren, Alexandra, Andrea, Tyler, Ryan, Colby and Kalen; two brothers, Jan (Sally) Magalengo and Charles (Mary Ann) Magalengo; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Barbara Karr; and a special group of friends, the Nomads. Joey was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Jennie (Kacelowicz) Magalengo and a twin sister, Barbara Jean, who died in infancy. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1227 E. Bristol Road, Burton, MI 48507. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday and noon to 8 p.m. Monday at the Brown Funeral Home, 1480 E. Hill Road, Grand Blanc where the Rosary will be prayed Monday evening.
