Doug was born on November 20, 1929 in Eaton Rapids, MI. An excellent three-sport athlete known for his elbows in pick-up basketball, graduated from Flint Kearsley High School in 1948 and married the love of his life Doris Marie Warren on Sept. 16, 1950. After spending thirteen months overseas as a Corporal in the United States Army - Artillery Division defending our country in the Korean War, he was awarded the prestigious British Empire Medal of Honor. He returned to Flint, MI to attend GMI (Kettering University), graduating in 1957 with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He and his wife of 65 years began their journey together in Fenton, MI, moved to San Antonio, TX, Springfield, IL, prior to relocating back home to Flint, MI. He spent 25 years at Buick prior to joining and retiring from General Motors Service Parts Operations.
Always known for the specifics, he was very involved with Ainsworth High School’s Athletic Booster Club and was the President of Ainsworth High School’s Hockey Booster Club often being scene filming Ainsworth High School Hockey contests.
Coach Serrels, also known as Banacek by his players, was well respected within the Flint, MI Youth Baseball circles. He was the only Manager to win City Championships in Midget, Class E, Class D, and Class C, all with Centilli Cement. He won an additional City Championship in Class D with Fortier’s Corvettes while stating that team was the best team he had ever assembled.
Some of his favorite past-times were Ancestry.com, The Russellville Ballroom, Flint Old-Timer’s gatherings, playing bridge, anything Ainsworth/Carman-Ainsworth athletics, Foutch’s Pub, Mario’s Pizzeria, Donna’s Donuts (although being put on probation numerous times for bad behavior), Detroit Tigers Baseball, The University of Michigan Football, Centilli-Smith, Centilli-Grossi, and Grossi Baseball Clubs. He enjoyed coaching his boys in baseball and hockey and especially following his grandchildren’s soccer, skiing, track, and lacrosse endeavors across North America. He was known in the Charlevoix/Boyne Mountain ski racing community as Grampa Doug. One of his later-in-life joys was watching his great niece Jade (Fulton) Hemenway’s historic Saginaw Valley State University women's softball career.
Doug was preceded by the passing of his wife Doris Marie Serrels, his mother Neva Lockwood, father Roscoe Serrels Sr., mother and father-in law, Julia and Frenchy Miller, brother Deyo Serrels, sister-in-law Sandy Warren, brother-in-laws Bill Curtis, Dave Warren, and Dennis Manick. Surviving are sisters Serene (Dennis) Moore, Sherrel Curtis, Ellen Manick, sons Roscoe (Doak) Serrels, and Andy Serrels. Also surviving are his precious grandchildren Roscoe (Sarah) Serrels, Marie (Jason) Murtagh, and Demi Marie Serrels. He had many nieces and nephews that he was so very fond and proud of. It was a running joke that they could’ve formed their own family hockey team if they’d been able to stay out of the penalty box long enough.
A special mention to his Sherrel Curtis, Serene and Dennis Moore for the countless hours visiting and helping out. Also to his many friends, former players, and family whom would always randomly show up for a visit…to his special friends Coach Jim Fuller, Greg Cocke, and the late Dick Winter for their unique bond. Finally, the team from Absolute Health and Genesee Gardens, on behalf of the entire family, we salute you as part of our extended family. And without failing to mention, to his favorite band, The Eagles, of whom he really never knew any of their lyrics.
Those desiring may make contributions to the Carman-Ainsworth High School Athletic Department Fund.
