GEROW, Robert Eugene – Of Brighton, formerly of Flushing.
Robert Gerow, age 81, died surrounded by family on Sunday, December 15th, 2013.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 20, 2013 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road.
Burial in Flint Memorial Park.
Visitation 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Robert was born on October 20, 1932 in Flint, Michigan and, after graduating from Flint Central H.S, served his country in the United States Air Force for four years. In 1951 he married his high school sweetheart Barbara Jean and they had five daughters together. As a member of the school's first ever graduating class, Bob earned his BA from the University of Michigan-Flint in 1959 and went on to teach middle school and high school biology in the Mt. Morris and Flint School Districts.
Also, in 1962, Bob was chosen from a select group to participate in the National Science Foundation's Academic Institute, which allowed him to complete his Master's Degree from the University of New Mexico on a full scholarship. This privileged program also made him one of only a few teachers in the nation to be certified at the time to teach a special course in physical science. In the classroom, his passion for science, along with his comedic nature, made him a school favorite. He never passed up on opportunities to add excitement to learning and often used unconventional methods to make science fun for his students.
In his days after retirement, Bob found enjoyment in researching his ancestral roots and had even become a bit of an adventurist in recent years-taking a hot air balloon ride, visiting Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon and even spending an afternoon enjoying football at the Big House. He lived a life filled with accomplishments anyone could be proud of. But nothing brought more pride and joy to his life than spending time with his family. As a father, grandfather and great grandfather, Bob had such a patient and gentle manner. His sweet nature and quirky sense of humor will be greatly missed.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Edna Gerow and his wife of 60 years, Barbara Jean.
He leaves behind his five daughters, Cathy (Gary) Bell, Gail (Tad)Lewek, Debbie (Gary)Davis, Vicki (Jim)Mitchell, and Cheri Taylor (Todd Jacob), 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
