BROWN, Avis May – Of Davison, age 89, died Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at her residence.
Avis was born in Bellaire, Michigan on February 11, 1935, the daughter of the late Joseph and Daisy Meulman. She was a lifelong resident of Michigan moving to various areas due to her father’s profession. She moved to the Flint area in 1951. Avis graduated from Bendle High School, Class of 1952. She began working at Piper McCredie Insurance in February, 1952 and was with them for 13 years. In April, 1957, she married Sam Cleon Brown where in August 1961, one son, Mark, joined them. The relationship dissolved in January 1967. In 1965, she joined the legal world at Evans and Evans, Attorneys at Law. The 67th District Court was created in January, 1969. William Evans became a Judge and Avis worked as a court reporter/secretary for him. In 1972, she was promoted to Assistant Clerk of the Court. In 1974, she became the Clerk/Admin until retiring in January 1992. In 1987-89 she graduated from Wayne State/Oakland with a special degree in court administration with various training sessions with the Supreme Court Justices followed. Avis enjoyed many interests as a pianist/organist at several churches her entire life. In 1979, she and Mark went on their first real vacation to Memphis/Nashville to learn more about both the Elvis fans and Southeran Gospel music in Nashville. Both of them became lifelong activities working with numerous groups: Speers, JD Sumner and Stamps, Gold City, The Tilleys/Kingsmen in the gospel world. The stamps and Jordanaires at Elvis concerts. The friends (many international) brought traveling into their lives. England, Belgium, Sweden, Australia etc., including three trips to Hawaii with their groups. Through Elvis connections Avis created a small group called “Elvis’ Family of Friends” again with members in 7 countries. It is active currently. This became not only a friendship but a mission ministry for the Lord. Early on it became apparent that too many “fans” didn’t just appreciate Elvis’ music etc! To quote Elvis, “There is only one King, and that is Jesus Christ”. She was a longtime member of South Flint Nazarene and with their closing, attended East Flint Nazarene. Various health issues prevented traveling in recent years.
Avis was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Dorothy.
She is survived by her beloved #1 son, Mark (Char);
Sister, Janice (Richard) Duckworth; Brother, Raymond (Marilynn) Meulman;
Several nieces and nephews.
Avis thanks her many worldwide friends for their impact on her life!
Donations may be made to East Flint Church of the Nazarene.
