Basil Jones, age 92 of Durand, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at Memorial Healthcare Center in Owosso. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2014 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, 501 N. Saginaw St. Durand, MI 48429. Pastor Rick Story will be officiating with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Vernon. family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. and Friday 1 hour prior to the service.
Basil was born February 2, 1922 in Nelson Lancashire, England, son of William and Beatrice (Wilmore) Jones. He came to the U.S. in 1926 as a young boy at the age of 4. He spent his life in the Durand Area and graduated from Durand High School in 1944. Mr. Jones was a Draftsman. He worked at Simplicity Engineering, Bendix Aviation, Redmond Co., and retired from Midland Brake in 1981. Basil also worked as an EMT with the DVA Ambulance for 15 years.
He was a ball player and played in many leagues in the Durand and Owosso areas. He also enjoyed golfing and hunting. His largest deer was a nice 8 point buck. Mr. Jones was a builder of many projects, wood working and models of airplanes, cars, battleships and aircraft carriers. He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a T4 in communication. One of Basil's favorite quotes was Love in life lasts forever. He loved his family and enjoyed his time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Jones married Betty Lenore Chase at the Durand First Congregational Church on August 10, 1946, built their home in the Durand area and together raised two fine children.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty; daughter, Diane Reeves of Corunna; son, Gary (Lynette) Jones of Durand; 4 grandchildren: Shane (Amy) Jones, Nick (Nicole) Jones, Blake Jones, Keith Jones; 10 great grandchildren: Cody, Joshua, Avarey, Blake, Alyssa, Taylor, Leah, Jason, Chloe and Carter Jones and great great grandson, Vincent Jones.
Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Irene Jones; brother, Sydney Jones and granddaughter, Misty Reeves.
