Richard J. Baker

Born: 9/13/1933
Died: 11/6/2017
Age: 84
Community: Flushing, MI

Richard J. Baker, age 84, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, November 6, 2017. Richard was born the oldest child to Mary (Ford) and Joseph Baker on September 13, 1933 in Walbridge, Ohio. He attended Walbridge High School, graduating in 1951. In 1954 he entered the United States Army and spent part of his two year enlistment stationed in the remote town of Whittier, Alaska. When he returned from the service, he enrolled at the University of Toledo, graduating in 1960 with a Bachelors in Business Administration, majoring in accounting. That same year he started his career with General Motors in Toledo, Ohio. In 1971 he was transferred and moved his growing family to the Flint area where he has called home for the past 46 years. After 32 years, he retired in 1992 as a Financial Administrator with General Motors Truck and Bus. He enjoyed his retirement with many activities, including going back to work, as an auditor, "for fun". He was always curious, reading anything and everything. He loved to travel and went on countless trips, either for work or pleasure. He was always on the go, whether it was in the RV with his wife or taking an ATV trip to the Upper Peninsula with his son and some buddies. He loved the outdoors and adventure-camping, fishing and boating were all favorite past times. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching all sports, but was especially fond of his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes. And, of course, all the harassment that went with being a Buckeye fan while living in Spartan/Wolverine country. It's a good thing he had a wicked sense of humor. He loved his wife and family above all else. He gave us advice and wisdom, even if we didn't want it, along with strength and courage, during the times when we did need it. He was our go-to guy. He will be missed by: daughters: Tara (J) Harvey, Mary Vaughn, Sue Hilsabeck, Sharon (Mike) Van Hine, Jackie Baker, Rhonda (Curtis) Sparks; Grandchildren: Andrea, Danny, Ronnie, Nikole, Kim, Matt, Brandon, Blake, Savanna, Brittany, Alexa, Conner, Carter, Gavin, Ryder, Bree & Cariss; Great Grandchildren: Grace & Carson; Brother-Robert (Beth) Baker; Sister-Janice Baker; and many more family and friends. He was preceded in death by: wife, Barbara "the love of his life"; son, William "Danny" Hinkle; grandchildren: Michael & David Sparks; son-in-law, Mark Vaughn, mother & father, Mary & Joseph Baker, brother Ronald Baker. A funeral service will take place at 12pm on Monday, November 13, 2017 at Reigle Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 12, 2017 from 4-8pm, and again on Monday, one hour prior to the service, beginning at 11am. Interment at Flushing Cemetery.
