OAKES, Sylvia Irene (Bridwell) - Of Flint Township, age 83, went to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, November 26, 2014. She was at home with her family at her side. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, November 28, 2014 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Pastor Kevin Kuehne officiating. Burial in Crestwood Cemetery. Visitation 11 a.m. Friday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
Sylvia was born August 2, 1931 in Hornersville, Missouri the daughter of Elmer Levi Bridwell and Bertha Allen (Yount) Bridwell. She married Robert Lee Oakes Sr. on August 3, 1955, who preceded her in death on November 16, 2010. She worked for Scott’s Insurance in Sikeston, Missouri, and for Chevrolet and the Flint Public Library in Flint, Michigan. Sylvia loved volleyball, playing in a league until she was 60 years old. She was an avid Pistons fan, and also enjoyed flower gardening. Her hand-made, personalized cross stitch birth announcements are cherished by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends. She was a wonderful wife and mother, creating a warm and inviting home where the neighborhood kids felt welcomed. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, parents, sister Eula Bennett, and brothers Cecil and Ray. Sylvia is survived by sister Wilma Louise Baker, daughters Dana Clark and Rebecca (Scott) Waller, sons Robert (Sharon) Oakes Jr. and Matthew Oakes; eight grandchildren: Corey Clark, Keri (Adam) Gailbreath, Tiffini (Jason) White, Robert Oakes III, Alaina (John) Grosjean, Nicholas Lefler, Amy (Matt) Sharkey, and Kevin Waller; and sixteen great-grandchildren: Morgan (Jon) Maas, Jordan Kuiper, Devin Clark, Mason Clark, McKenzie Clark, Amiyah Clark, Breanna Clark, Jaden Wolfe, Kira Wolfe, Gage Wolfe, Kinsley Wolfe, Ian McArthur, Hannah Gailbreath, Thomas Gailbreath, Gideon Grosjean and David Sharkey.
