BIGELOW, Harry Towers “Bud” III - Of Flint, age 85, died with peaceful dignity surrounded by his family Tuesday, January 3, 2012. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, January 7, 2012 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, G-3139 Hogarth Avenue, Flint, Father Robert F. Copeland and Reverend Monsignor Richard J. Groshek con-celebrating. Entombment at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Pius X Elementary and Luke M. Powers High School. Visitation 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint, where a Rosary will be prayed 7 p.m. Friday evening. Mr. Bigelow will be at the church 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of the Mass. Bud was born in Chicago, IL on November 10, 1926, to Towers Bigelow and Marion McKuen. He was raised in Bangor, MI. As a young boy he enjoyed working in his grandfather’s apple orchard “Pick of the Pack”. He graduated from Bangor High School as Class President and Captain of his State Championship Football Team. Bud served in World War II, stationed in Austria. He graduated from Michigan State University, where he played varsity football. Bud also received an advanced degree from Eastern Michigan University. He was recruited to the Flint School System by Frank Manley. Bud is the last of the original four Flint Community School Directors. In November, 1955, Bud married Rosemary Foley at St. Matthews Catholic Church. Bud wore many hats in the Flint Public School System; they included Community School Director, Dean of Boys and elementary Principal at Dort, Clark, Cook and Neithercut. Bud had a saying “Everyday is a Holiday and I live it.” He always celebrated the importance of education. Bud is very proud of his Irish Heritage and was chosen as “Irish Father of the Year” in 1996, by the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Bud also enjoyed playing Santa Claus for neighbors and schools. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and Retired Mens Fellowship of Greater Flint. Retired years were enjoyed by traveling the world, spending summers at his cottage on Lake Huron and hosting the Bigelow Olympics. Surviving are wife, Rosemary; children, Julie (Ron, Katherine Rosellen) VanCura of Fenton, Harry Towers Bigelow IV (Colleen, Mary Rose, Harry Towers V and Sean) of Stamford, CT, Betty Bigelow of Kalamazoo, MI, Suzie (Mike, Jack) Hlavach of Waterford, MI and Pattie (JoJo, Molly, Sarah) O’Sullivan of Norwalk, CT. Bud is also survived by his brother, Tom Bigelow of Indianapolis, IN, Ann Gerould of Gobles, MI, Carol Dooley of Kalamazoo, MI, Barb French of Dallas, TX and Mary Schroeder of Pleasanton, CA; numerous nieces and nephews. Bud’s family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Caretel Inn Of Linden and staff of CCU of McLaren Hospital.
