Joan R. Shirey age 87 of Davison died Saturday November 30, 2013 at McLaren-Flint. A funeral service will be held 7:00pm at Hansen Funeral Home Groves Chapel Downtown Davison. Pastor Desiree Lawson officiating. Cremation will take place at Sunset Hills. Private inurnment at Meadowview Memorial Gardens will take place at a later date. Family will receive 12:00noon until time of services with a 7:00pm followed by a 7:30pm memorial services by Amaranth Flint Chapter #138. Those desiring may make contributions to Alzheimer’s Association or Trinity United Presbyterian Church. Joan was born in Derry PA on June 26, 1926 the daughter of the late Carl and Dorothy (Gower) Syster. She married Donald C. Shirey in Latrobe in 1945 they moved to Flint in 1949, and Donald preceded her in death in 2002. She worked 40 years at Sorensen Gross Construction Co. and Erickson & Lindstrom Construction Co. Joan was a life member of the Order of Eastern Stars Flint Lodge #138, member of Order of Amaranth Flint Court #2, PHP Ladies Oriental Shrine El Said #28, Past Grand Guardian International Order of Jobs Daughters, and member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church. In 1941 she worked on the first computer in the United State as a teenager and worked with many famous scientists on the Manhattan Project (the Atom Bomb) in Latrobe PA. Surviving are children; Gregg Shirey, Lynn (Steve) Young, and Tracy LaFuente (Dennis); grandchildren: Jason (Courtney) , Justin , Jessica (Brian), Dion (Hope), Dominic (Jennifer), and Deric (Stefanie); great grandchildren: McKynzie, Olivia, Isabella, Noah, Lucy, and Brooklynne; sisters: Carol Megill, Gwyn (Jim) Moran, Sandra (Bob) Steel; brother: Dick Shirey, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by son Barry in 2008, 3 sisters: Eva Rae, Patricia Jean, and Yvonne Groat.
