BIRDSEY, Orvel “Jerry” – Of Grand Blanc, age 80, died Thursday, October 9, 2014 at his residence. He had been battling cancer and was in and out of remission for the past six years.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11am Monday, October 13, 2014 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 11804 South Saginaw Street, Grand Blanc,
Father Jonathan Perrotta officiating.
Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation 1-8pm Sunday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. A Rosary will be prayed 7pm Sunday evening at the funeral home. Orvel will be at the church 10am Monday until the time of the Mass
Orvel was born in Traverse City, Michigan on September 3, 1934, the son of Byron and Ella (Vetter) Birdsey.
He graduated from St. Francis Catholic High School Class of 1953 in Traverse City.
Orvel served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Orvel married Nancy Armitage on November 8, 1958 in Flint.
He enjoyed carpentry, traveling and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Mr. Birdsey retired as a Millwright from General Motors Buick Motor Division in 1992, after 37 years of service and was a member of UAW Local #599.
Surviving are wife, Nancy;
six children, William (Kim) of Grand Blanc,
Carol (George) Champion of Prattville, AL,
Barbara Haggadone of Grand Blanc,
Mark (Rachel) of Grand Blanc,
Alan (Sue) of Berkley and
Andrew of Gaines;
11 grandchildren;12 great-grandchildren;
three sisters and one brother.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson and one sister and five brothers.
